How an 8-dog paired sled team actually works.
In a paired formation the dogs run two by two along a center mainline. Each pair has a job.
Lead dogs (front pair)
They take the musher’s commands, set the line, and choose the trail. The two leaders are connected collar to collar. That neckline is not attached to the mainline.
Swing / point dogs (second pair)
They follow the leaders and help the team hold its shape through corners so the line doesn’t swing wide.
Team dogs (middle pair)
The engine. They add pulling power and help keep a steady pace.
Wheel dogs (pair closest to the sled)
They run right in front of the sled and take a lot of the load. They need to stay calm with the sled moving right behind them.
How the pull travels:
harness → tugline → mainline → shock absorber → sled bridle.
Necklines keep dogs in position. Tuglines carry the load. The mainline runs down the center of the team.
Not every dog belongs in every spot. Leaders need brains. Wheel dogs need strength and a steady temperament. The middle needs dogs that just put their heads down and pull.
