Last time we talked about asthma, let’s keep talking about the lungs!

A tracheal wash is a diagnostic procedure that we do when we suspect a pony that is battling a bacterial infection in the lungs most commonly - pneumonia. The wash is warranted when they are spiking fevers, coughing, and there are changes on a lung ultrasound.

We place a sterile catheter into the trachea, infuse sterile saline, and then aspirate the fluid back to place in a culturette. The sample is then sent off to see what bacteria is growing and what antibiotics that specific bacteria is sensitive to. This procedure is the fastest way to get your equine healthy again when battling pneumonia instead of guessing what antibiotic to use!

Here is an example of the fluid we aspirated from a tracheal wash from a sick pony🤧🤒🤢

Mucus built up? Coughing? Breathing issues? Poor performance?
Your athlete might be suffering from Inflammatory Airway Disease. Medical intervention is
sometimes needed and we are here to help!

Below are some examples of diagnostic tools. A rebreathing exam is a helpful tool where a bag is placed over the muzzle for 30 seconds to increase CO2 levels, inducing your equine to take a deep breath when taken off. This helps us identify subtle or hidden abnormal respiratory issues. Other diagnostic tools we use include endoscopy to visualize the airway, and a procedure called brochoalveolar lavage (otherwise known as BAL). For this procedure, saline is temporarily infiltrated into the deep sections of the lungs and “washed” back into a collection tube. The sample is then evaluated for subclinical allergic responses or red blood cells. These tools are vital to optimize treatment protocols and get your horse (and you) breathing and performing better!

We had the pleasure of pulling out our favorite piece of equipment for this beautiful pony yesterday! If your veterinarian does not see anything on a resting scope, they might warrant a dynamic scope. This scope tracks the mechanics inside the pharynx while in motion. Big shout out to Miss Delphi for being the best patient and also Tanglewood Farms for letting us use this amazing facility!🏇

Serum Amyloid A is a protein produced by the liver that is increased in response to inflammation and infection in your equine. A SAA test is a very unique and helpful diagnostic tool. The test gives you the results in just ten minutes, ranging from numbers 0-3000! Is your equine off feed, coughing, running a fever, or seems off? This 10 minute test will tell you if they are battling an infection💉🩸

Are you noticing behavioral changes in your equine? Does your horse not have a good appetite as they should?

Stomach ulcers can be the reason why your athlete is not feeling up to par. We see stomach ulcers in the Squamous, which is the upper part of the stomach, and Glandular, which is the lower part of the stomach.

Lesions in the bottom of the stomach, as shown in the pictures below, can be caused by too much stress. These lesions can be a main cause of poor performance. Stomach scoping is required to diagnose these ulcers and tailor the correct treatment plan. There are many different types of medications used to manage these lesions and it is dependent on the severity and the individual horse.

Schedule a stomach scope with us and let’s get your equine athlete feeling comfortable again!
