Five years ago, we started this journey.

Just me and Charlie. Every day outside training. No one to throw birds. No one to bounce ideas off of. No one to critique us. Just two of us figuring it out one day at a time.

Fast forward five years, and today I had three other guys over, with a total of 8 dogs working together.

That’s pretty damn cool.

When we decided we wanted to breed one litter a year, we had two things in mind. First, we wanted to produce some really nice dogs that people would enjoy hunting, training, and living life with. Second, we wanted to build a small training group where we could share our love for training, learn from each other, and help make each other better.

I’d say we’ve accomplished both.

This little group didn’t happen overnight. It’s been built brick by brick, dog by dog, friendship by friendship.

I’m incredibly grateful for the people who have joined us along the way and for every dog that has been part of the journey.

Here’s to many more days in the field, more dogs, more learning, and continuing to build this little training group into something special.

Five years down. Hopefully many, many more to go.

Maple baby is looking for her next trainer! Her and I are developing a really nice rapport, and I’d absolutely love the opportunity to be her future trainer once she hits 6–7 months. But right now, this girl needs a place to call home. 😉

Today we started overlaying the place command with the action of stepping onto the place board. Maple has been figuring things out quickly, just like we expected from these intelligent pups! You’ll even see the one time I had to ask her to come a little farther before she earned her reward. That’s part of the process—teaching them to think through what we’re asking.

Maple probably doesn’t have the most “get up and go” of the litter, but don’t let that fool you. With the right training, she is going to make one heck of a gundog.

She’s going to smash birds, give you everything she has, and then, when the work is done, she’ll turn right back into the biggest snuggler in the house—warming up on the couch next to the fire.

And the best part?

You won’t find a better pedigree at a better price.

Ran the big dogs - Charlie, Belle, Piper.

1/2 as a double with 2 as the go bird.

3/4 as a double with 4 as the go bird. 4 landed in some thick cover hay field. I had salted the area with a few bumpers. With dove season coming I just wanted them getting in there and staying there to find success!

Run the blind.

Really proud of all the dogs and the work they put in today! This cool down has been nice but we’re ready for a big cool down!

A glimpse into puppy feeding time with Maple (who is available 😉)

The first two videos are great as we are really spending time associating the clicker with great things! Actually, everything that comes from the hand is great!

The real learning comes in the third video where she decides she is only going to put the front two paws on the board. She looks around happily not understanding why she isn’t getting fed. Finally, she figures it out and receives the reward! While I didn’t show the next clip, it was 100x faster at hitting all four feet on the board. Easily put, she learned.

Now we have to understand that this isn’t day one or two. She is now being held to the standard that all four must hit the board to be fed! We started with 1 and then 2 and then 4 and next to sit!

Lastly, we are forcing her to sit, wait patiently and be released to eat. As she ages, this simple thing relays into steadiness. While we won’t require steadiness on a retrieve for quite some time, it’s these small things that add up!

From the moment she was born—the littlest puppy we had ever seen—things were frantic. The next 10 hours were touch and go.

Birdie was the very first puppy born, and she just fell out, catching all of us by surprise. We hadn’t even seen any pushing. My wife’s immediate response was, “We’re keeping her!”

I was adamant there would be no puppies hanging around. I didn’t need another one. But as the hours turned into days, I saw just how much of a fighter Birdie was.

She was always willing to fight for her food. We bottle-fed her for a couple of weeks, but her will to live never faded. She knew exactly where Mom’s good milk was, and she fought her way to it every time!

As she got older and more mobile, that same little fighter never went away. She was little, but she was mighty. And somewhere along the way, it became pretty evident to me that this little girl might just make one hell of a hunting dog.

I don’t really know what Birdie’s future holds. Maybe there won’t be many goose hunts. Maybe there won’t be puppies of her own. But one thing I do know—she’s family, forever.

Wow. Where did the years go?

I remember just a few short years ago bringing home this little yellow puppy I had waited three years for. The deposit went down, the suspense began, and my mind immediately started racing with thoughts of how I was going to train this dog, all the hunts we would share, and where life would take us together.

It’s safe to say… she’s taken us places I never could have imagined.

She introduced me to a whole new love—a hobby that grew with every step I took into the field. She led to another dog. Then another. And another.

And now, she’s the face behind the logo.

She was our first momma, and she has now raised 18 babies. She has been an exceptional mother and has taught me more than I could have ever imagined.

Where would I be without her? Probably still tearing down the blind every time a duck fell to chase it myself!

Charlie has taught me so much in just five short years. She’s been my hunting partner, my teacher, our first momma, and the foundation of everything Dogwood Retrievers has become.

Charlie, today we raise a toast to you, girl!

I’ll never be able to thank you enough for everything you’ve taught me and everything you’ve given our family and Dogwood Retrievers.
