Exercise is important, especially for dogs working toward a healthier weight, but strenuous activity during extreme summer heat can be dangerous.
Watch carefully for warning signs such as:
Heavy or frantic panting
Excessive drooling
Weakness or stumbling
Vomiting
Confusion or unusual behavior
Bright red or pale gums
Move your dog into a cool or air-conditioned area, offer small amounts of cool water, wet their body with cool rather than ice-cold water, and contact a veterinarian immediately if you suspect heatstroke.
A safe training and exercise plan should match your dog’s size, age, fitness level, and the weather.
