Six years ago today, snapped this photo of me and my new dog,, “Darcy”. I forget if I had already decided her name was going to be Haddie…either way, I sure had no idea what adventures were in store for us.
How did I get so lucky? I was looking for a small scruffy terrier, just like my last dog Elly, who rang in at 4.5 pounds (last three photos on this post!). Elly had died earlier that year and I was missing her SO much. But as I searched for Elly 2.0, I kept checking on Darcy, until I finally just decided to send in an application. I’d never hear back and could stop. checking. on. this. dog.
But I did hear back. I had an interview, took them on a FaceTime tour of my apartment in Studio City, and the next thing I knew I was driving us home; first to my apartment and later all the way across the country to Washington, DC.
I prepared myself to defend her sweet face when people would inevitably be rude, but I could count on one hand how many times that’s happened. I think I know why, and it’s the only nothing that makes sense: this dog is magic. I regularly tell people that this is the kindest, most supportive corner of the internet and I’m so, so grateful to you for celebrating my gorgeous and magical dog.
To celebrate Darcy becoming Haddie and becoming my sidekick (let’s be honest, I’m HER sidekick), I’d love it if you could check out Mutt Scouts page and if you’re so moved, throw some money their way. They specialize in lost causes, and it’s never easy to keep that funded. I want to know that if another Haddie shows up at their doorstop, they can give them the same care they gave my sweet girl, and give another human a change at being the luckiest in the world. As a side note, I got a push notification that today is my 1,300th day of continual sobriety (which adds up to just over three and a half years). Maybe I could have done it without a dog or with a different dog, but I’m sure glad I don’t have to find out.
