My GSD puppy's ears WON'T stand up 👂 6 reasons why + how to handle it safely (and when to see a vet)!
🌀 First, breathe: ears stand thanks to CARTILAGE firming up, and most GSD ears stand between 4–6 months. Under 6 months + floppy ears = usually totally normal!
The 6 reasons:
1️⃣ TEETHING (the #1 cause!) — the body "borrows" calcium for growing teeth, so ears pop up then flop back for weeks. → Be patient; offer safe chew toys.
2️⃣ GENETICS — it's largely in his DNA (strong-eared parents = likely strong ears). → Nothing to change, and that's OK!
3️⃣ NUTRITION — feed a quality LARGE-BREED puppy food. 🚩 DON'T add calcium supplements to "force" ears up — it can harm joint growth & won't work!
4️⃣ EAR SIZE & WEIGHT — bigger/heavier ears just take longer. → Give it time.
5️⃣ INJURY or EAR INFECTION 🚩 — head shaking, scratching, odor, discharge = see the vet PROMPTLY. Protect ears from rough tugging.
6️⃣ TOO MUCH HANDLING — constantly folding/checking ears can weaken soft cartilage. → Leave them alone!
🚩 DON'T DIY-tape ears from a video — improper taping causes pain, skin damage & infections. Ear support is a VET decision.
🩺 See the vet if: infection signs, OR ears still down after teething (~6–8 months).
💛 And remember — floppy ears don't make him any less of a GSD. He's perfect either way!

Working Line 🆚 Show Line German Shepherd — same breed, surprisingly different! Which is right for YOU? 🐕🐕
🌀 First: they're ONE breed (German Shepherd) — NOT two! Both trace back to founder Max von Stephanitz, but breeders split into two camps with different goals:
⚡️ WORKING line: bred for drive, ability & performance (police, military, sport, rescue)
🏆 SHOW line: bred for the classic elegant look & the show ring
👀 LOOKS: the biggest tell is the BACK — show line = a more sloping topline + fuller black-and-tan saddle coat. Working line = a straighter, level back + leaner, muscular sable/bi-color body.
🧠 THE BIG DIFFERENCE — energy: WORKING = intense drive, needs a job + experienced, active owners ⚡️ • SHOW = calmer, happy with lighter activity & family time, often the easier family fit 😌
🌀 Myths busted: working line is NOT "aggressive" and show line is NOT "weak" — a well-bred working dog is stable, a well-bred show dog is capable. And both are equally purebred!
🩺 Health: both risk hip/elbow dysplasia, degenerative myelopathy & bloat. (An extreme show-line back slope can affect joints — choose a breeder who breeds for a healthy, functional body.)
