Today is , and I’m feeling so much gratitude for the journey I’ve had with my dogs — past and present.
When I was 17, Neyo came into my life — a spunky little beagle with a huge heart. I had just become a certified vet assistant and was working at a pet retail store, learning everything I could. I researched all things beagle and did everything to give him the best life. He taught me patience, showed up for me on my hard days, and always met me at the door with joy — no matter what I was going through. He recently passed at 17, but his impact will always stay with me.
Jayne came into my life in my mid-20s. She’s always been eager to please, quick to learn, and full of love. But she also gets anxious in certain settings, and through her, I’ve learned how to advocate — not just for her, but for myself too.
Then there’s Loki — my unexpected gift. He followed me and the other two home one day and never left. Calm, sweet, and just the right amount of mischievous, he brought a peace I didn’t even know I needed.
These dogs have shaped who I am — as a person and in my continued education in the pet industry. They’ve shown me what unconditional love truly means. I’m so thankful to be doing life with them.

Hey, I’m Ashley! I’m 35, living in Baltimore, MD, I’m a vegetarian and a dog mom to my two babes, Jayne & Loki.

(my birthday is February 5th – so mark your calendars! 🥳)

I’ve been passionate about animals since I was a kid, leading me to start my education in animal care at just 16. Becoming a veterinarian has always been my dream, and I’m so grateful to be on this journey.

When I’m not working, you can find me in the gym, cooking both for myself and my dogs, tie-dying, reading a good book, curating elite playlists, playing around with makeup, or diving into DIY protective hairstyles & crafts. Today marks The Blvck Gypsy Holistic Pet Care’s 5th anniversary! (Fun fact: when my mother was pregnant with me, my due date was 2/21.) February is my favorite month of the year for many reasons, aside from my own birthday, but also because it celebrates Black history in our world’s history. When I moved back to Baltimore 7 years ago, I never would have predicted or imagined any of this. In February of 2020, I made the choice to take a leap of faith and start my own pet care business, initially focusing on house call grooming services. I made this choice without a vehicle and without knowing that we would face a pandemic just weeks later 😂.
Over the years, I’ve built meaningful relationships, met other business owners in the pet industry, had an incredible experience volunteering during the pandemic, and continued my education—the list goes on. There have also been heavy losses and setbacks along the way that I didn’t think I would recover from, but God gave me the strength to keep going.
In the near future, I plan to share my journey in depth because, most of the time on social media, we only see the highlight reels that people choose to share. When it “looks” different from our own personal experience, we sometimes doubt our own potential. I believe all it takes is seeing that something else is possible to encourage us to pursue our dreams.
Thank you to anyone who supported my dream, encouraged me, shared a post, referred me, prayed for me, or helped me in any way throughout this journey. I’m truly thankful to celebrate this milestone and excited to see/share what this year brings. 💜
