An exercise I like doing with a group lesson is ā€œpairsā€. The riders have to work with each other and still pay attention to the surroundings. It takes an incredible amount of focus and constant adjustments. The skill level of the riders dictates the speed we can work in. These gals did a super job. By the end they were coordinating changing directions and even switching pairs.

Good Ponies!
Lesson ponies are gold… these little guys are SOOOO tolerant and allow their riders to make mistakes and continue learning.

This is a mixed group of two more advanced 8s and two 5s. It’s fun to have the example for the 5 year olds to follow from the ā€œbig kidsā€. They worked on keeping good space and using their corners. (The 5 year olds are riding in halters.)

This week we set the walk poles up on this slight bank for a little added challenge. A big bonus is that it’s in a cooler shady area, so an easy low impact workout to do on hot days. I used the extra footing edge from the arena (it was fenced slightly smaller than the footprint) and anchored the border to hold the footing.

Ideally this pole bank should be navigated with the horses 5’ or so from the leader so if the horse wobbles out you have a safe space away from them. Similar to lunging, they need to maintain their position to stay over the poles. Lolo initially struggled with this with the leader on her right, but it was a really good communication exercise for Sarah as well.

The turns in and out of the box on the ends is a bonus, adding pivots to the low impact workout.

The Power of Poles

1000 poles (10 days of 100)

These photos aren’t a perfect comparison but there is a measurable difference (two degrees).

The lowest point of his back has moved forward slightly.

The wither is a little more filled in.

His hind end looks a tad less lumpy.

The abdominal line is more defined.

His underline looks tighter.

How awesome is this?!

He’s scheduled for 20 more sessions…
2000 more poles to go!

On the downside…. He’ll need to have his saddle fit adjusted soon. 🤣
