🐾 Senior Pet Awareness Month 🐾

Aging isn’t a disease—but not every change should be blamed on getting older. ❤️

As our pets age, they can become more prone to arthritis, dental problems, and changes in organ function. And because pets are so good at hiding discomfort, the early signs can be easy to miss.

Keep an eye out for changes like:
🐾 Slowing down or difficulty getting around
😴 Sleeping more than usual
🍽️ Changes in appetite
💧 Changes in drinking or urination
🐶 Acting differently or seeming uncomfortable

It can be tempting to say, “They’re just getting old.” But a change in behavior may be your pet’s way of telling you something more is going on.

Regular wellness care with your primary veterinarian is especially important during the senior years. And when a new or concerning issue pops up and your regular vet isn’t available, PetMedic Warwick is here to help. 🩺💙

💬 Have a senior pet at home? Tell us their name and age in the comments—we’d love to celebrate them!

🩺 Sometimes The First Visit Is Only Part of the Plan

Meet Vincent. ❤️ Vincent came back to see us for his suture removal—and as you can see, it was definitely a team effort. 🥰

This allowed us to see how he was healing and to make adjustments to his medication and treatment plan.

Spoiler alert - Vincent has to wear his cone for another week. ️🐾

🐾 𝑽𝒆𝒕𝒆𝒓𝒊𝒏𝒂𝒓𝒚 𝑪𝒂𝒓𝒆 𝒂𝒕 𝑮𝒓𝒐𝒖𝒏𝒅 𝒁𝒆𝒓𝒐 🐾

In the days following September 11, 2001, hundreds of search-and-rescue dogs worked alongside their handlers at Ground Zero—searching through debris, navigating dangerous conditions, and providing something just as important: 𝙝𝒐𝙥𝒆.

Behind these incredible K9 teams were veterinarians and veterinary professionals working to keep them safe and able to continue their mission.

🩺 𝐕𝐞𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐚𝐫𝐲 𝐜𝐚𝐫𝐞 𝐰𝐚𝐬 𝐚𝐯𝐚𝐢𝐥𝐚𝐛𝐥𝐞 𝐨𝐧-𝐬𝐢𝐭𝐞
Veterinary teams monitored the working dogs throughout long, exhausting shifts, treating injuries and watching closely for signs of illness or fatigue.

🐾 𝐓𝐡𝐞𝐢𝐫 𝐩𝐚𝐰𝐬, 𝐞𝐲𝐞𝐬 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐚𝐢𝐫𝐰𝐚𝐲𝐬 𝐧𝐞𝐞𝐝𝐞𝐝 𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐧𝐭 𝐚𝐭𝐭𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧
Toxic dust, ash, broken glass and debris covered the site. The dogs were frequently washed and their eyes, noses and paw pads cleaned to help protect them from the hazardous environment.

❤️ 𝐓𝐡𝐞𝐢𝐫 𝐞𝐦𝐨𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐚𝐥 𝐰𝐞𝐥𝐥-𝐛𝐞𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐦𝐚𝐭𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐞𝐝, 𝐭𝐨𝐨
With so few survivors being found, handlers sometimes staged “mock finds,” allowing the dogs to make a successful discovery, receive praise and play—and stay motivated to continue their work.

The story of the 9/11 K9 heroes is also a story about the extraordinary bond between animals and people—and the handlers, veterinarians and support teams who cared for them while they cared for others.

🌿 𝑺𝒆𝒂𝒔𝒐𝒏𝒂𝒍 𝑨𝒍𝒍𝒆𝒓𝒈𝒊𝒆𝒔 𝑨𝒓𝒆𝒏’𝒕 𝑱𝒖𝒔𝒕 𝒂 𝑯𝒖𝒎𝒂𝒏 𝑷𝒓𝒐𝒃𝒍𝒆𝒎! 🐾

Is your pet suddenly sneezing, scratching or licking more than usual? Seasonal allergies could be the culprit.

Keep an eye out for:
🐾 Excessive paw licking
👂 Itchy or irritated ears
🤧 Sneezing or watery eyes
🔴 Red, itchy or irritated skin
🩹 Frequent scratching

What starts as a little itch can sometimes lead to skin or ear infections if the irritation continues.

If your pet seems extra itchy, sniffly, or uncomfortable, PetMedic Warwick can help when those allergy symptoms need attention.

💬 Does your pet struggle with seasonal allergies? Tell us what signs you notice first!

🎒🐾 Back to School = Back to Pet-Proofing!

As everyone settles into the new routine, keep these pet-safety reminders in mind:

🎒 Hang up those backpacks
Lunchboxes and backpacks can contain food, medications, gum, or other tempting items. Store them on a high hook or behind a closed door—not on the floor where curious noses can investigate.

🍇 Watch those lunch leftovers
Grapes, raisins, chocolate, and products containing xylitol can be dangerous or even life-threatening to pets. Make sure unfinished lunches go somewhere paws can't reach.

✏️ School supplies aren't chew toys
Pencils, pens, erasers, glue, earbuds, chargers, and other small objects can become choking hazards or cause intestinal problems if swallowed.

🔌 Don't forget the cords.
New laptops, tablets, and chargers mean more electrical cords around the house. Keep them tucked away from pets who like to chew.

A little extra pet-proofing can help make the transition back to school safer for every member of the family. ❤️🐶🐱

And if your pet gets into something they shouldn't? PetMedic is here when your regular veterinarian isn't available.

💊🐾 Feeling better doesn’t always mean treatment is finished!

When we send your pet home with medication, every dose is prescribed for a reason. Even if they’re back to their happy, tail-wagging, treat-demanding selves, it’s important to give all medications exactly as directed and complete the full course unless your veterinarian tells you otherwise.

We know giving medication isn’t always easy. 😅 Some pets can detect a pill hidden in approximately 47 pounds of cheese. 🧀👀

A few reminders:

💊 Follow the dosing instructions carefully.
⏰ Give medications on schedule and for the prescribed length of time.
🐾 Don’t stop just because your pet seems better.
📞 If you’re having trouble giving the medication, miss a dose, or notice side effects, give us a call rather than making changes on your own.

Getting your pet through the entire treatment plan gives them the best chance at a complete recovery. ❤️

The meds we send home only work if they make it into your pet—not under the couch. 😉

🐾 𝑺𝒆𝒑𝒕𝒆𝒎𝒃𝒆𝒓 𝒊𝒔 𝑵𝒂𝒕𝒊𝒐𝒏𝒂𝒍 𝑷𝒆𝒕 𝑰𝒏𝒔𝒖𝒓𝒂𝒏𝒄𝒆 𝑴𝒐𝒏𝒕𝒉! 💙

Pet insurance can help take some of the financial worries out of veterinary care, allowing you to focus more on an important question:

❤️ “What does my pet need?” Instead of 💰 “What can I afford?”

Because every policy is different, it's important to take the time to research coverage, exclusions, deductibles, reimbursement rates, and waiting periods to find the plan that works best for your family.

You can research different policy options and providers on sites like this one: https://www.pawlicy.com/

Planning for the unexpected today can make a difficult day a little easier tomorrow. 🐶🐱

Do you have a pet insurance policy you love? 👇Drop their name in the comments to help other pet parents with their research.
