🚨🍂 YOUR DOG DIDN’T FORGET THEIR TRAINING… FALL JUST GAVE THEM 47 NEW REASONS TO IGNORE YOU. 😂🐕

Leaves blowing. New smells. Squirrels. Cooler weather. Kids back outside. All of a sudden, that “perfect” walk looks a little different.

So here’s your H2H Dog Training Tip of the Week:

👉 The Check-In

While walking, randomly pause and give your dog a chance to look back at you. The moment they do, reward it!

Here’s a practical example:

You’re walking and your dog spots a squirrel ahead. Instead of waiting for the leash to go tight, create some distance and let your dog notice it. The moment they look back toward you—even for a second—mark it with praise and reward them.

Over time, your dog starts learning that seeing something exciting doesn’t automatically mean pulling toward it. Checking in with you becomes part of their decision-making.

You can practice the same thing with leaves blowing across the sidewalk, another dog passing by, people walking, or anything else that grabs their attention.

The goal isn’t to make your dog ignore the world. It’s to teach them that they can notice distractions without immediately reacting to them.

Start somewhere easy, then gradually practice around more distractions as your dog gets better. Keep sessions short, positive, and successful.

🍁 A few intentional minutes of training can make a BIG difference when those fall distractions show up.

🐾 Training Tip of the Week 🐾

“Hands Are Not Toys!”

Does your dog like to mouth, grab, or play-bite at your arms when they get excited?

Mouthing can quickly become a habit if the behavior accidentally turns into a game. Instead of pushing your dog away or pulling your arm back and forth, try this:

🐾 Freeze — Stop moving your arm.
🐾 Disengage — Calmly remove attention.
🐾 Redirect — Offer an appropriate toy.
🐾 Reward — Praise and play when they choose the toy.
🐾 Repeat — Consistency teaches your dog what is appropriate.

The goal isn’t simply to tell your dog “don’t bite.” It’s to teach them what they should do instead.

Remember: Training isn’t just about correcting unwanted behavior—it’s about building better choices.

🚨 Your Dog Isn’t “Stubborn” — They May Just Be Confused.

Ever give your dog a command, they ignore you, and you think, “They KNOW better!”?

Here’s the thing: knowing a command and choosing to perform it in every situation are two completely different skills.

🐾 Start small.
🐾 Practice in low-distraction environments.
🐾 Gradually increase distractions.
🐾 Reward the behavior you want repeated.
🐾 Be consistent with your expectations.

If your dog only listens in the living room but forgets everything the second you step outside… they probably need more practice, not more frustration.

Training isn’t about demanding perfection.

It’s about teaching your dog how to succeed.

🐾 Training Tip of the Week 🐾

Reward the behavior you want—not just correct the behavior you don’t.

It’s easy to notice when our dogs are jumping, barking, or pulling on the leash. But some of the biggest training breakthroughs happen when we reward the calm moments.

Did your dog choose to sit instead of jump?
✔️ Praise them.

Did they look at you instead of another dog on your walk?
✔️ Reward them.

Did they settle quietly on their bed?
✔️ Let them know they made the right choice.

Dogs repeat behaviors that consistently pay off. The more you recognize and reward the good choices, the more often you’ll see them.

Remember: Training doesn’t only happen during a scheduled session. Every interaction with your dog is an opportunity to teach.

🐾 Client Spotlight: Rook 🐾

Every dog has a story, and I’m honored that Rook was the very first client to trust Havoc to Harmony Dog Training with his journey.

When we began working together in early June, it was clear that the outside world was overwhelming for Rook. Everyday sights, sounds, and even something as simple as the wind could make him uneasy. Rather than focusing only on obedience, our goal became helping Rook build the confidence he needed to simply enjoy being a dog.

Today, Rook is making steady progress. While he’s still hesitant about new environments and unexpected noises—including the wind—he’s learning that he can work through those moments instead of immediately shutting down. He’s spending more time outside, exploring more of his property, and showing us that his confidence is growing with every session.

As that confidence has grown, so has his training. Rook is developing healthy boundaries, learning commands like “Stay,” and steadily increasing the amount of time he can remain focused and successful. Every small win is another building block toward a more confident, resilient dog.

The biggest reason for Rook’s success has been his owners. They’ve stayed committed, practiced consistently between sessions, and trusted the process even when progress came in small steps. Their dedication has made all the difference.

Rook will always hold a special place in the story of Havoc to Harmony Dog Training as my very first client. His journey is a reminder that progress isn’t about perfection—it’s about building confidence one success at a time. I’m incredibly proud of how far he’s come, and I’m excited to continue helping him discover that the world isn’t nearly as scary as it once seemed.

Every confident dog starts somewhere. Rook is proving that with patience, consistency, and teamwork, even the smallest victories can lead to life-changing progress.

🐾 DOG TRAINING TIP OF THE WEEK 🐾

Stop Repeating Commands

“Sit… Sit… Sit… SIT!”

It happens more often than you think—but repeating a command teaches your dog they don’t need to respond the first time.

Instead:
✔ Give the command once.
✔ Stay calm and confident.
✔ Help your dog make the correct choice if needed.
✔ Reward the behavior as soon as they succeed.

Your dog learns through consistency, not repetition.

The goal is for your dog to understand that responding the first time is what earns praise and rewards.

Remember: Every interaction is a training opportunity.

🔥 Too Hot for a Walk? Keep Your Dog Busy Indoors! 🐾

Hot summer days can make long walks or outdoor play unsafe, but that doesn’t mean your dog has to be bored.

Remember: mental exercise can be just as tiring as physical exercise.

Here are a few easy ways to keep your dog engaged when it’s too hot outside:

🧠 Training sessions
Practice obedience skills like sit, down, place, recall, or work on fun new tricks. Even 10–15 minutes of training can help burn mental energy.

🦴 Food puzzles & enrichment toys
Puzzle feeders, snuffle mats, frozen Kongs, and lick mats can keep your dog busy while encouraging problem-solving.

👃 Nose work games
Hide treats or kibble around the house and let your dog sniff them out. Sniffing is mentally exhausting in the best way.

❄️ Frozen treats
Freeze dog-safe treats, broth, or peanut butter in toys for a cool enrichment activity.

🎯 Place work & impulse control
Hot days are a great time to work on calmness, patience, and duration behaviors.

🎾 Indoor games
Try tug, hide-and-seek, or controlled fetch in a safe indoor space.

Not every dog needs constant physical exercise—many dogs actually benefit more from learning how to settle and use their brain.

A tired dog isn’t always the one that ran the most… sometimes it’s the one that thought the most. 🐶

🎆 Fireworks & Dog Safety Reminder 🐾

While fireworks may be exciting for us, they can be overwhelming and frightening for many dogs. Loud noises, flashing lights, and unexpected booms can trigger stress, panic, and escape behaviors.

Here are a few ways to help keep your dog safe during fireworks:

🏠 Keep your dog indoors even dogs that normally enjoy being outside should be brought inside before fireworks begin. A scared dog can panic and escape faster than you might expect.

🚪 Secure doors, gates, and windows Double-check fences, doors, and latches. Make sure family and guests know to be extra careful when going in and out.

🎶 Create a calm environment: Close curtains or blinds, turn on a TV, fan, or calming music to help muffle outside noise.

🦴 Offer enrichment or distractions: Lick mats, stuffed Kongs, chew items, or food puzzles can help redirect nervous energy and create positive associations.

🐾 Don’t force comfort: If your dog wants to hide, let them. Avoid forcing interaction or corrections if they’re scared. Give them space and allow them to decompress.

🏷️ Check ID tags and microchip info: If your dog does get loose, updated contact information can make all the difference in getting them home safely.

⚠️ Watch for signs of stress:
Excessive panting, pacing, trembling, drooling, whining, hiding, or trying to escape are all signs your dog may be struggling.

Remember: every dog handles fireworks differently. Preparing ahead of time can help make the night safer and less stressful for everyone.

Stay safe tonight, and give your pups a little extra patience and support. ❤️🐶

☀️ Summer Safety Reminder for Dog Owners ☀️

As temperatures rise, it’s important to remember that our dogs can overheat much faster than we do.

Here are a few simple ways to help keep your dog safe and cool this summer:

🐾 Walk during cooler hours
Try early mornings or later evenings when temperatures are lower and pavement is cooler.

🐾 Check the pavement
Before walks, place the back of your hand on the pavement for 7 seconds. If it’s too hot for your hand, it’s too hot for your dog’s paws.

🐾 Always provide fresh water
Make sure your dog has constant access to cool, clean water—especially during outdoor play.

🐾 Provide shade and breaks
Whether outside training, playing, or relaxing, dogs need frequent breaks out of direct sunlight.

🐾 Watch for signs of overheating
Know the warning signs of heat exhaustion:
• Excessive panting
• Thick drooling
• Bright red gums
• Lethargy or weakness
• Vomiting or stumbling

If you notice these signs, move your dog to a cool area immediately and contact your veterinarian.

🐾 Don’t overdo exercise
Even high-energy dogs can overheat quickly in summer weather. Adjust activity levels based on temperature and humidity.

Remember: just because your dog wants to keep going doesn’t always mean they should.

Stay safe, stay cool, and give your pups some extra water and shade this summer. 🐶💦
