💛 ZACK UPDATE: FIP DOESN’T HAVE TO MEAN GOODBYE 💛
We have an update on our sweet Zack — and this is one we are incredibly happy to share.
Zack is doing AMAZINGLY well. 🐾
When Zack began battling FIP (Feline Infectious Peritonitis), his energy was low and we knew we were dealing with a very serious disease. Today, we are seeing a completely different kitten. His energy has returned, he feels better, and he is showing us more and more of the happy little guy we knew was in there.
And one of the remarkable things about today's FIP treatments is just how quickly some cats can begin to respond.
So, what exactly is FIP?
FIP develops when feline coronavirus — a virus that is extremely common among cats — changes within an individual cat and triggers a serious inflammatory disease. FIP can affect different parts of the body and may appear as "wet" FIP, with fluid accumulating in the abdomen or chest, or "dry" FIP, which can affect organs, the eyes or nervous system.
For many years, an FIP diagnosis was considered almost universally fatal.
Thankfully, that story is changing.
New antiviral treatments, particularly compounds such as GS-441524, have completely changed what an FIP diagnosis can mean. These medications work by interfering with the virus's ability to replicate, giving the cat's body a chance to recover.
And sometimes the change is astonishing.
Cats who have been extremely lethargic, feverish and uninterested in food can begin showing improvement remarkably quickly after treatment begins. Research has documented fever resolving and appetite returning in some cats within the first few days of antiviral treatment.
That is why Zack's transformation means so much to us.
We aren't finished yet. FIP treatment requires veterinary guidance, monitoring and completing the prescribed treatment protocol. But every playful moment, every good meal and every burst of kitten energy feels like another little victory.
Not very long ago, rescuers dreaded hearing the three letters F-I-P because there was so little we could do.
Today, there is HOPE. 💛
And right now, Zack is showing us exactly what that hope looks like.
