Hey, hey, hey, puppy people! 🩷🐶🐱
We are here to answer the question of the season, why are my animals SO itchy right now!?!
- Fall environmental allergies- just how humans react to spring pollen, animals react to plant life that decays in the fall. (Ragweed, decaying leaf piles, etc)
- Instead of sneezing, dogs experience skin inflammation. This is where the excessive paw licking, chewing and scratching comes in.
- Dust mites!! We might be turning our furnaces on right now for the first time this year and closing our windows. Dust mites and summer dander gets trapped inside, triggering flare ups. Constant scratching breaks the skin barrier, creating an open door for bacterial or yeast infections.
- Flea surge! fleas increase in the fall due to increased moisture and cooler temperatures. They are trying to find some place warm to hide. They want to hitch a ride on your babies when going on walks or just even if we are just letting them outside for a couple of minutes to go potty.
I only have an indoor cat, why does it have fleas?
- Fleas can hitchhike on your clothes, shoes or bags from wildlife that is in your backyard (squirrels, raccoons, etc)
- If you have cats and dogs and your dog uses flea prevention, live fleas can temporarily ride on the dog before jumping onto the cat.
Why does my animal have fleas if they are on prevention?
- Most preventatives kill the fleas after the fleas bite, rather than repelling them from the start, meaning new fleas from your home environment can still land on your pet before dying.
What to do
- Wipe pets paws after being outside with pet safe wipes or a damp towel
- Flea and tick preventative!! We recommend Advantage, or if you want to try a flea collar, Seresto collars.
‼️CAPSTAR PILLS‼️ capstar pills ONLY kills the fleas that are on the animal and lasts for 24 hours. It is NOT a preventative. Capstar is awesome to help combat a flea infestation. Again, NOT A PREVENTATIVE.
- Medicated baths or flea baths. We offer bath onlys with our medicated shampoos, but you are also welcome to bring in your own medicated shampoos from your vet. Our flea baths will only kill the fleas that the pet currently has, it also is NOT a preventative.
- Vacuum carpets and rugs. Wash blankets that your pets normally cuddle up in a hot water cycle.
-use outdoor flea and tick spray for lawns and gardens
- Flea prevention is recommended all year round but if it’s something you really don’t want to do our not in your budget and you are treating an infestation, 3 consecutive months of flea prevention should break the cycle.
We hope this was helpful 🩷🐶
