Shameless brag alert! We mentioned that we had staff members who were off learning at the International Veterinary Emergency and Critical Care Symposium in Savannah. What we have learned is that 2 of our technicians, Lauren and Max, were part of a team that won second place in the VERY competitive CPR Battles. Here is a video that IVECCS posted about the battles and both Lauren and Max are interviewed about their learning experience. Our entire Midcoast Team goes through extensive Recover CPR training in order to quickly initiate CPR and be as effective as possible. These two represented us well and we are very proud!

Case Spotlight: Caramel

Caramel, a 10-year-old Labrador Retriever, presented to Midcoast Animal Emergency Clinic for weakness and lethargy. Her dedicated owners were already aware that she had a splenic tumor and knew the signs to watch for, as she was scheduled to undergo a splenectomy with his regular veterinarian just a few days later.

Dr. Miller quickly determined that the cause of Caramel’s symptoms was significant bleeding from the tumor, causing a large amount of blood to accumulate in her abdomen. With Caramel's condition becoming critical, her family elected to proceed with emergency surgery, and our skilled team of doctors, technicians, and assistants got to work.

During surgery, Caramel required an immediate blood transfusion. Given the urgency of the situation, the best option was an autotransfusion. In simple terms, blood that had pooled in Caramel’s abdomen was collected, filtered, and returned to her bloodstream to help maintain circulation to his vital organs. While this procedure carries some risk, it can provide a lifesaving bridge in emergency situations like Caramel’s. Caramel made it through surgery, but she still needed additional blood.

That’s when her owners stepped in with a solution! At home, they had a healthy 4-year-old Labrador named Finn. After basic screening tests confirmed he was a suitable donor, Finn became a hero for his big sister and donated lifesaving blood. As Caramel recovered overnight, our team administered the transfusion over several hours with continuous monitoring to ensure her safety and comfort.

And now for the best part: after two days in the hospital, one surgery, two blood transfusions, and around-the-clock care, Caramel was able to return home to her loving family!

It is important to note that surgery is not the right choice for every pet facing this condition, and there are situations where other decisions may be equally reasonable and compassionate. For Caramel, however, emergency surgery offered the best chance for a positive outcome, and we are thrilled to report that her recovery continues to go well!

We are incredibly proud of our team, whose skill, dedication, and compassion make stories like this possible. We are also deeply grateful to Caramel’s family for trusting us with her care during such a difficult time.

And of course, we can't forget Finn—who quite literally helped save his buddy’s life and undoubtedly earned every treat and belly rub that followed.

Several members of our team will be attending IVECCS next week, one of the largest veterinary emergency and critical care conferences in the world. We're excited to learn, grow, and bring back new knowledge that helps us provide even better care for the pets and families we serve.

As we head into the holiday weekend, we want to give everyone a heads-up that we are expecting longer-than-usual wait times at the ER. We have multiple critical patients hospitalized and stable patients waiting to be seen.

Wait Times for any STABLE patient will be atleast 2-3 hours today.

Our team is working hard to care for every patient, but emergency cases must be prioritized based on medical urgency, which means patients who arrive after you may occasionally be seen before you.

We appreciate your patience and understanding while our team works to provide the best care possible for every patient. ❤️

If your pet is experiencing an emergency, please don’t delay seeking care because of anticipated wait times. Our team will assess your pet and prioritize care based on their needs.
