Got family coming in for the holidays? I know how it goes. You've got people coming and going, food being prepared, and a whole lot more activity around the house than usual.

German Shepherds take “neighborhood watch” pretty seriously. Somebody walks by, a car pulls in, a squirrel makes a questionable decision three houses down... they probably noticed it before you did.

That awareness is one of the things people love about the breed, but it’s also a good reminder that choosing a dog should be about more than looks. Different breeds come with different drives, instincts, energy levels, and needs.

Small dogs need training too.

It’s easy to laugh off certain behaviors when a dog is small enough to pick up and carry away, but size doesn’t change the importance of good manners. Pulling on the leash, ignoring commands, jumping on people, barking, or struggling to settle can still make everyday life harder than it needs to be.

I want the same thing for the little dogs I train that I want for the big ones: clear communication, good obedience, confidence, and the ability to enjoy more freedom with their owners.

Good training isn’t about the size of the dog. It’s about building a better life with the dog you have.

House manners are a big part of what I want a dog to learn.

It’s great to have a dog that can sit, down, and come when asked, but what does everyday life look like at home? Can they settle down when you’re trying to relax? Can they stay calm when there are other dogs around? Do they understand when it’s time to play and when it’s time to just hang out?

That’s the kind of training that makes living with your dog more enjoyable. These three are showing exactly what I like to see: calm, comfortable, and able to settle together in the house.

That’s the face of a dog waiting to see what we’re doing next.

One of my favorite things to see during training is a dog that wants to stay involved. Not because I’m constantly asking for another command, but because we’ve made working together worthwhile.

Training can be serious when it needs to be, but it should also be something you and your dog enjoy doing together. Some days we work hard. Some days we play more. Usually, there’s a little bit of both.

A trained dog should still get to be a dog.
