Lets have a chat about obesity in animals! Obesity is an accumulation of excess body fat, which leads to excess weight. Dogs are considered overweight when they weigh 10%-20% more than their ideal body weight, and then considered obese when they hit 20% and up. In North America obesity is the most common and preventable disease.Compared to lean fit dogs, obese dogs have a higher risk in health issues, such as osteoarthritis, diabetes, heart disease, and more. The first step to helping your pet is recognizing and acknowledging there is an issue. Unfortunately we are in the social media age where it is “funny” to post overweight dogs, so it can be difficult to tell if your pet is overweight or ideal. At home you can do a couple of things to help decipher your pet's thickness. For the ideal thickness, rub on the ribs of your pet, you want it to feel like the flesh on the back of your hand against the bone feels. If your bet feels more like your knuckles, or the ribs stick out, this means your pet may be too thin. If the ribs feel more like the fleshy part of your palm, your pet may be carrying too much weight for their body. Helping your dog lose weight can be a long tricky task, but there are ways to get there! We can start by giving less treats or replacing treats with vegetables, calculating the caloric intake for your pet's ideal weight (NOT the current weight). If you have concerns about your pet and their weight, schedule an appointment today to meet with your veterinarian to discuss options!

¡Hoy es cinco de mayo! Don't forget to make your pup a “Barka-rita”.This is a non-alcoholic treat for your pet to enjoy. A “barka-rita” is usually a fun, dog-friendly twist on a margarita—basically a cute treat you can give your pup while you sip your own favored beverage. Here’s an easy, safe version:

🐕🐾 Barka-rita (Dog-Friendly “Margarita”)🐾🐕

Ingredients:

1 cup plain coconut water (unsweetened) or low sodium

2–3 tbsp plain Greek yogurt

1–2 tbsp mashed banana, blueberry, strawberry, cucumber or watermelon (seedless)

Ice cubes

Optional “rim”:

A little plain yogurt + crushed dog treats or unsweetened shredded coconut

Instructions:

Blend the coconut water, yogurt, and fruit until smooth.🥥

Add ice for “on the rocks”🧊or blend the ice in for a frozen treat.🍧

If you want, dip the rim of a dog bowl or cup in yogurt and then roll in crushed treats.

Pour and CHEERS!🥂

‼️⚠️ Quick safety notes⚠️‼️

⚠️No alcohol, lime juice, added sugar, or salt (those are for humans only).

⚠️Stick to dog-safe fruits and veggies

⚠️Serve in moderation—this is a treat, not a meal.

🥼Today is World Veterinarian Day!🥼

As a clinic, we want to extend a very special thank you to the incredible veterinarians at Walpole Veterinary Hospital. We are deeply grateful for everything they bring to our team—hard work, passion, dedication, and genuine compassion. Our clinic would not be the same without this amazing group of doctors.

We also want to recognize and thank veterinarians around the world. Without them, this profession wouldn’t exist, and we wouldn’t be able to care for and support the wide variety of animals they serve every day.

Be sure to thank a veterinarian for their hard work and dedication. Veterinary medicine is not an easy profession—it often comes with long hours, challenges to maintaining a healthy work-life balance, and significant financial strain due to student debt. It can also take a real toll on mental health.

Please keep this in mind—all of the veterinarians deserve far more recognition and support than they often receive. 🩺

‼️🐴🥼Exciting News from Walpole Veterinary Hospital!🥼🐴‼️
We are thrilled to announce the addition of two outstanding veterinarians to our team: Dr. Morgan Ferland, a proud graduate of Oklahoma State University, and Dr. Melissa Vogellus, who joins us from Cornell University. Both Dr. Ferland and Dr. Vogellus bring a wealth of knowledge and a passion for veterinary medicine, and we are delighted to welcome them to our hospital family.
With their arrival, we are pleased to expand our services to include equine medicine! In addition to our trusted large animal and small animal care, Walpole Veterinary Hospital will now be seeing equine patients. Our new equine services will be available starting June 1st.
If you have horses in need of veterinary care, or know someone who does, please reach out to schedule an appointment. We look forward to continuing to serve our community and offering even more comprehensive care for all your animals!
Welcome, Dr. Ferland and Dr. Vogellus!
