This is so sad. Please keep sweet K9 Kepi in your prayers

K-9 KEPI and I were recently requested by CalFire for deployment at the Glass Fire/LNU Lightning Complex Fire.

While at Base Camp, I noticed that KEPI seemed fatigued after only a few hours. We returned home that day and I closely monitored her. Over the next 48 hours, she seemed to be panting more and her energy level was decreased. She was seen by our vet today and she has an ear infection and he heard some slight wheezing in her lungs. Blood work was ordered and he wants to check Kidney and Liver functions as well as blood counts.

We have deployed to several major fires throughout the State over the past 3 years. Since we are the first of our type of K-9 team, there are no studies on prolonged exposure at these disasters. Most of the K-9’s that responded to Ground Zero developed cancers that eventually took their lives.

K-9 KEPI and I became partners November 6th, 2015. The past 5 years K-9 KEPI has done amazing, specialized work and I could not be more proud to serve as her handler. As her handler, I am solely responsible for her health and safety. I have decided to retired her from disaster response.

We will continue to serve our local agencies with Critical Incident Response call outs, delivering Death Notifications and serving Kaisers Emergency Departments and Trauma Response. Please keep us in good thoughts and prayers.

K-9 KEPI and I perform duties that are often times difficult and tragic, but necessary. If you are not aware, we are a volunteer unit and you can help support the team financially through donations to the Winters Police K-9 Fund. Thank you for your support.
