📌 Important Update from Hensley Homestead Dachshunds

We want to let our families and future puppy families know that we no longer offer full AKC breeding rights on any of our puppies.

All puppies from Hensley Homestead Dachshunds are placed as pet-only companions and will receive limited AKC registration paperwork.

We are incredibly intentional about where our puppies go and the future of the bloodlines we have worked hard to build. Because of this, full breeding rights are not available.

Thank you so much for understanding and for supporting our program. ❤️🐾

Our newest little puppy pile has arrived! 🐾🤎

Junie Bea delivered six beautiful babies on Monday, and we are so excited to share a tiny peek at them with you! These little ones are already such sweet little chunks, and everyone is doing wonderfully — nursing, thriving, and settling in exactly as we hope to see.

Junie Bea did an amazing job, and we’re so proud of her. Right now, this litter is on hold and not available while we give Mama and babies a few more days to rest, grow, and make sure everyone continues doing well.

For now, we just wanted to let you enjoy a few seconds of tiny puppy tails, sleepy snuggles, and the sweetest little puppy pile. 🥹🐶

We can’t wait to show you more very soon!

The algorithm knows us a little TOO well. 😂🐾❤️

But can you blame us?! Once you fall in love with dachshunds, there’s no going back!

Who else has a feed full of little legs, floppy ears, and adorable doxie faces? 🙋‍♀️🐶

A little look inside our program today. 🐾🤎

All of these sweet babies are already reserved, but we wanted to share a peek at what life looks like for our three-week-old litter right now.

At this stage, they are still spending most of their time in their warm, cozy whelping area with Mom and their littermates. Their days are filled with sleeping, nursing, growing, and slowly becoming more aware of the world around them.

Those little legs are getting stronger every day, but for now, piling up together on a soft blanket in a warm, quiet space is exactly where they need to be. ❤️

DOES GENETIC TESTING GUARANTEE A HEALTHY PUPPY?

No — and this is an important part of understanding genetic testing.

Genetic health testing is an incredibly valuable tool, but it cannot guarantee that a puppy will never experience a health problem during its lifetime.

Genetic testing can identify certain known variants associated with inherited diseases or increased health risks.

But health is influenced by much more than the genetic variants we can currently test.

Things that can affect a dog’s health include:

🐾 Known genetics
🐾 Genetics science may not yet fully understand
🐾 Multiple genes working together
🐾 Nutrition
🐾 Environment
🐾 Growth and development
🐾 Body condition
🐾 Lifestyle
🐾 Injuries

That is why responsible breeding means looking at the whole picture.

Genetic testing is one important piece of that puzzle, along with overall health, temperament, structure, pedigree and careful selection of breeding pairs.

At Hensley Homestead Dachshunds, we use Embark because more information helps us make better-informed decisions for our dogs and for future generations.

❤️ Genetic testing doesn’t promise perfection.

🧬 It gives us information.

❤️ And information helps us make better breeding decisions.

HEALTH GENETICS, COLOR GENETICS & TRAITS — THEY AREN’T THE SAME THING

When families hear the words DNA testing, they sometimes assume everything on a DNA report means the same thing.

It doesn’t.

🎨 COAT & TRAIT GENETICS

DNA can give us information about inherited physical traits such as:

🐾 Coat color
🐾 Coat length or texture
🐾 Patterns
🐾 Certain physical characteristics

These help breeders understand some of the traits puppies may inherit.

🧬 HEALTH GENETICS

Health testing looks for specific genetic variants associated with inherited diseases or increased health risks.

These results are used differently.

This is why breeders have to look at much more than color when planning a litter.

We absolutely love the beautiful colors, coats and patterns that make dachshunds so special.

But a beautiful color should never be the only reason two dogs are bred together.

At Hensley Homestead Dachshunds, health information, temperament, structure, pedigree and genetics all matter when we evaluate our breeding decisions.

🎨 Color genetics can help predict what puppies may look like.

🧬 Health genetics help us understand potential inherited health risks.

❤️ Responsible breeding means knowing the difference.
