🐾Training Thursday: Recall for fun!!🐾

Want a new way to practice your dog’s recall? Recall games are a great way to do it!

This week we’re featuring a two-person Round Robin Recall. You can even use it to start teaching recall from the ground up though it’s helpful to play in a long hallway with any doors shut if you do.

The pattern with two people is pretty simple. Person A calls the dog using their name and recall word (ex. “Boomer, come!”). Person B stays still and boring while Boomer goes to Person A, and when Boomer gets to Person A, that person marks the desired behavior with a “yes” or “click” and gives lots of yummy treats. When Person A disengages from Boomer, Person B calls Boomer over, again using his name and recall word.

Alternate back and forth until Boomer starts predicting the pattern, and then who ever he isn’t with gets to call him!

If you have more than two people that want to play, great! The same rules apply, and only one person calls the dog at a time. Change up the order of whose turn it is to call the dog often!

Beginner Cavalettis — Part 2!

Last time, we introduced our college students to Beginner Cavalettis! Now, we’re moving on to the next stage!

In this stage, the hurdles are arranged in more of a W shape, bringing them closer together and creating a new challenge for our fuzzy friends. This setup encourages them to be more mindful of their foot placement as they navigate the course, while continuing to build body awareness, coordination, impulse control, and focus!

As we gradually increase the difficulty, our goal is to help our dogs develop their physical and mental skills while keeping training fun and engaging.

Remember, our “Beginner Cavalettis” is an activity we started doing in college to help dogs build these skills. It’s not a competition exercise, but a creative way to challenge our dogs and help them learn! 🐶

Training Thursday: Troubleshooting Down

Does your pup refuse to lay down on cue, even refusing to follow a treat lure into position? Try having them crawl under something just high enough that the only way they can get through it is by crawling…and laying down!

For smaller dogs, you can use your leg like Avery is doing in this week’s video. For larger pups, crawling under rungs on a chair or under a yard stick resting on stacks of books can be a good set up. Get creative!
