When I begin teaching a young horse to slow down, I don’t start with the cue.
This two-year-old answered right away, but he was still tense. So I didn’t add pressure. I got off and let him follow me on the ground until he relaxed.
When I got back on, he slowed down with two more strides forward instead of stopping hard.
Relaxed mind first, softer cue second.

Three-Year-Old Morgan | Part 2

After the groundwork in Part 1, I’m teaching this three-year-old Morgan to understand my inside rein and outside leg together. I guide his shoulders without blocking his forward movement and release as soon as he responds.

When a young horse leaves the round pen and comes into the arena for the first time, I want his first answer to my hand to be: relax.

Following is a natural instinct for a horse. I don't fight it. I use it.

Part 1 of 2.

Does your young horse get tense when you ask for a lead change? Don’t add more pressure.

After he changes leads, I let him rest with his shoulder in the correct position. That becomes the easiest place for him to be.

Save this for your next ride.

Can a horse learn to stay calm when his buddies leave?

Sometimes, movement is the key to finding relaxation.

Duke might think he can do the roping himself!

This two-year-old stud from Pitzer Ranch is only on his third session chasing the dummy steer, and he's already showing some nice natural cow sense.

I love seeing that instinct, but I'm also working on keeping his body organized and making sure he stays responsive to me, even when he's focused on the steer.

When Luna gets distracted, I let her look.
My job is to keep her shoulders supported and bring her back into balance without taking her attention away.

I want the horse to finish the rollback in the right position before I give him the long rest.
The rest is the reward for the position I want him to remember.
