MENTAL HEALTH MONTH • Awe as Medicine
Awe is that feeling that makes your whole body exhale — the way the sun hits the mountains, a rainbow over the ocean, someone choosing kindness when no one is watching.
Awe calms the nervous system and helps ease the inflammation tied to depression, stress, and chronic pain.
Depression can make life feel small and lonely.
But emotions are waves. They rise, they crash, they return.
You are the ocean — steady, deep, still here.
When you feel disconnected:
• Step outside, even briefly
• Look for one thing that surprises you
• Let music, prayer, or poetry open your chest
• Hand to heart + belly
• Remember: this moment will change
• Reach for one person who reminds you you’re not alone
Awe doesn’t erase pain, but it widens the frame.
It reminds us that even in darkness, there is still beauty, still goodness, still light trying to reach us.
What helps you during times of sadness or when you feel depressed — what brings you back to awe?
Your answer might be the medicine someone else needs today.
