The Rose family recently moved into a new home in Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio and wanted to make sure their handsome boy, Lenny, could fully enjoy his yard leash free. Part of the yard was fenced in already with a low wrought iron fence, but they were worried he would climb or jump it! We were able to install our underground wiring on the outside of the physical fence to keep him securely in it so no matter how acrobatic he is, he's not getting out of the yard. Sorry Lenny! Flag training is one of the most important parts of teaching your dog to safely use an underground fence.

The training flags give your dog a clear visual boundary so they understand *where* the correction zone is and *why* they're being corrected. Over time, they learn to recognize their boundary using scent and familiar landmarks, even after the flags are removed.

We've seen DIY training attempts where the flags were skipped entirely. Without that visual guide, dogs can become confused or fearful because corrections seem to happen "randomly." Instead of confidently enjoying their yard, some become afraid to leave the porch or patio.

No matter what brand of dog fence you have, proper flag training helps your dog build confidence, understand their boundaries, and enjoy their freedom safely. No surprises, just clear communication and successful training.

Curious about our Dog Guard Out of Sight fence installation process?

Most properties only take about two hours for installation of wire and equipment, then about an hour going over how your system works, your first boundary/correction walk with your dog and answering any questions you may have.

Your dog should be off leash in about a week! That's it, that's how quickly your dog can have freedom in their yard without being tied up or walked around on a leash.

Northeast Ohio's colder months are nearing and we know you don't want to have to stand outside in the cold waiting on your dog to just do their business so you can both go inside. Most dogs don't mind the cold as much as you do. Don't cut their enrichment and exploring short by dragging them back inside immediately. It's probably super boring staring at the four same walls all day.

New puppy?

At Dog Guard of Ohio, we recommend puppies be at least 12 weeks old before beginning correction training.

Until then, we use *Beep Training*! We program the collar so it only gives an audible warning, no static correction. As your puppy approaches the boundary flags, the collar beeps and you gently guide them back into the safe area. This helps them become familiar with their new yard, learn where their boundaries are, and get comfortable wearing their receiver.

We also recommend Beep Training for:
Puppies under 12 weeks old
Dogs adjusting to a new home or yard
Timid dogs or dogs with past trauma

Beep Training builds confidence before correction training begins, giving your dog the best possible foundation for success.

We met the Grace family of Medina, Ohio this summer which included their pups, Whittle & Eddie. We only got photos of Whittle though as Eddie was a bit shy. So now you get to see two photos of Whittle instead! Her serious pose and her... not so serious pose.
