🌍 Two Worlds, One Sport: The Longines Controversy
Some of the world’s most valuable show jumping horses are competing in Egypt, but just outside the arena, other horses are living a very different reality. 🐴
From October 22–24, the Longines Global Champions Tour is bringing the world’s top riders and horses to the Pyramids of Giza. 🇪🇬
It’s an incredible setting, but it’s also sparking a much bigger conversation about horse welfare.
While elite show jumpers receive exceptional care, working horses and donkeys near
by can face malnutrition, exhaustion, and limited veterinary care. Many of these animals support families who depend on tourism for their income.
So how can some horses receive world-class treatment while others, just miles away, struggle to receive basic care?
Some question whether hosting such a prestigious event in an area with animal-welfare concerns sends the wrong message. Others believe the international attention could actually help.
Ahead of the competition, Egyptian officials and welfare organizations announced initiatives to improve conditions for working horses, including veterinary care, vaccinations, and registration.
But will those improvements last once the competition is over? 🤔
The tour brings an opportunity for positive change, but it also highlights just how differently horses are treated around the world.
Maybe the real question isn’t whether the tour should be in Egypt, but what kind of impact it leaves behind.
💬 What do you think? Is the tour helping bring attention to an important issue, or highlighting a bigger problem in the equestrian world?
