Brazos Valley Equine Hospital - Waco
Important Client Update — EHV—1 Outbreak Response

To help contain the current neurologic EHV—1 outbreak in Central Texas and protect the broader horse population, effective immediately:
BVEH Waco is temporarily CLOSED for routine appointments and elective procedures. Our facility is now restricted to testing, quarantine, and treatment of horses exposed to or confirmed positive for EHV—1.
This will allow the most severe cases to be managed by referral hospitals such as Texas A&M and Oklahoma State while we handle additional exposed and affected horses under strict biosecurity protocols.

For all primary care, wellness visits, lameness, dentistry, and emergencies involving horses with NO known EHV—1 exposure, please contact:
• BVEH Salado — (254) 947—1292
• BVEH Navasota — (936) 825—2197
• Texas Equine Hospital — (979) 778—2529
• Signature Equine Hospital — (254) 968—7898
Local Waco-area services:
• Vaquero Equine Hospital — (254) 722—2001

These hospitals each have their own biosecurity protocols in place. Please call ahead to verify these protocols and restrictions on caseload.

Elective procedures on any horse with known exposure to affected premises are discouraged until the horse has completed a minimum 14—day quarantine.

At this time we are not able to offer farm calls. As the situation progresses we may be able to begin offering select ambulatory calls once we have protocols and staffing to minimize risk.

We appreciate your understanding and cooperation during this critical time. This decision was not made lightly, but is necessary to slow the spread of this serious neurologic disease

Updates will be posted as the situation evolves. Thank you for helping us protect Texas horses.

Edited to add:
BVEH NAVASOTA HAS NO CASES ONSITE IN NAVASOTA. It is safe to bring your horse for their normal appointments, we will have additional biosecurity protocols before and in between appointments. We are working to set up an offsite location to triage potential sick horses. We will have updates tomorrow for you. Dr. Buchanan will go live here on Facebook at 8:15am tomorrow (Wednesday) morning.

BVEH Advisory:

EHV-1 Cases in Horses Returning From a Recent Event

Brazos Valley Equine Hospitals wants to notify horse owners that we are aware of multiple confirmed cases of EHV-1 in surrounding hospitals, and several suspected cases including several horses with neurologic signs (EHM) currently being diagnosed in the barrel horse community. BVEH has not admitted and is not treating and EHV or EHM cases.

The State of Texas Animal Health Commission is aware of the outbreak.

At this time, 5–10 horses are known to us to be sick, but the true number is likely higher as many cases go unreported.

What Horse Owners Should Do Right Now:

1. Keep all horses at home!
Please avoid hauling, clinics, lessons, shows, or mingling horses for the next several weeks until more information is available.

Movement is the #1 factor that spreads EHV-1.
________________________________________

2. Check temperatures twice daily!
Fever is usually the first sign (often before nasal discharge or neurologic symptoms).
• Temp at or above 101.5°F = call your veterinarian.
________________________________________

3. Notify your veterinarian immediately if your horse exhibits:
• Fever
• Weakness or incoordination
• Standing with hindlimbs wide
• Tail tone changes
• Difficulty urinating
• Lethargy or decreased appetite

Early intervention improves outcomes.
________________________________________

4. Discuss treatment options with your veterinarian.

For febrile or exposed horses, your vet may recommend:
• Valacyclovir
• Aspirin or other anti-thrombotics
• Anti-inflammatories
• Supportive care

(These should only be used under veterinary direction.)
________________________________________

5. Biosecurity matters.
• Do not share water buckets, hoses, tack, grooming tools, or stalls.
• Disinfect trailers, thermometers, and crossties.
• Isolate any horse with fever immediately.

About Vaccination.

Current evidence shows vaccines do not prevent EHM, but they can reduce viral shedding and shorten viremia, which lowers barn-wide spread and is important to the community.

Boosters are helpful when:
• A horse was vaccinated > 90 days ago, or
• You are preparing for high-risk environments (events, hauling, mixing populations).

What the research shows:
• Booster vaccination increases IgG1 and IgG4/7, the antibody classes linked with limiting viremia.
• Reduced viremia = reduced likelihood of severe disease and decreased transmission.
• Boosters are most effective in younger horses, previously vaccinated horses, and non-pregnant horses.

Vaccines do NOT stop a horse already incubating EHV-1 from developing signs, and they do not eliminate the risk of neurologic disease. For horses already exposed or febrile, do not vaccinate until cleared by your veterinarian.

We Will Continue to Update You!

BVEH is actively monitoring cases and communicating with veterinarians across Texas and neighboring states. We will continue to provide updates as more information becomes available. If your horse is showing fever or any neurologic signs, please contact your veterinarian or call BVEH immediately.

Please ask any questions in this post and we will work to answer them quickly. Stay tuned for additional updates, including a Live Q and A with Dr. Ben Buchanan tomorrow (Wednesday).

We have documents on our website www.bveh.com specific to EHV and biosecurity. Additional resources included below.

Stay safe, monitor closely, and thank you for helping limit the spread.

Over the past few weeks, we have experienced significant growth in our followers and received an overwhelming number of likes. We feel fortunate to serve such a supportive community.

In recognition of our new members, we would like to introduce a new initiative. For the next few days, we will be featuring one member of our Waco staff daily, allowing you to become better acquainted with our team.

Today, we begin with our fearless leader, Dr. Jonathan Budd. If you have visited our Waco location, you have likely seen him performing various tasks such as flexing horses, taking X-rays, administering shockwave treatments, or suturing lacerations.

What many don’t see are the hours he dedicates long after the appointment has left, to go over radiographs with a fine tooth comb, the numerous phone calls to ensure all options are exhausted for horses with limited alternatives. Many don’t see the worry and dismay when a horse isn’t getting better as quickly as he had hoped, or the joy he exudes when a horse makes significant improvement. These are just some of the qualities that make him an exceptional veterinarian.

He possesses a profound compassion for these animals, and it is evident in his calm demeanor amidst the chaos and his eagerness to assist wherever needed.

Ladies and Gentlemen, let me introduce you to our very own, Dr. Jonathan Budd.

04/10/2025

Progress, no matter how slow or how modest it may seem, is a step forward moving us closer to our goals.

We are grateful to all of our wonderful clients for showing such patience and understanding while we work towards improving the clinic and our facilities so that we can better accommodate and care for the community that we serve.

Being a small, but dedicated staff of only 4 members, we have come leaps and bounds from where we started and we do not intend to stop the momentum. Thank you all for being on this journey with us.

Please enjoy this brief video of one of our most recent improvement projects; new foundation in the front stalls of our Stallion Barn!
