Remi is working on one of the most useful real-life leash skills: turning with her handler and staying connected when passing people or dogs.

The goal isn’t just “don’t react.”
The goal is: notice the distraction, check back in, and keep moving with your person.

These little turns help build focus, confidence, and better leash manners one pass at a time.

Why I prefer a regular leash over a bungee leash for teaching loose leash walking:

A bungee leash can be great for certain activities, but when we are teaching loose leash walking, clear communication matters.

With a regular leash, the dog can feel the difference between slack, light guidance, and leash pressure. That helps us teach, “stay with me, check in, and keep the leash loose.”

With a bungee leash, the stretch can create a delay. The dog pulls, the leash stretches, and sometimes it accidentally rewards more pulling because the dog gets a little extra distance before they feel the stop.

For training, I want the leash to be simple, clear, and consistent.

Loose leash walking is not about yanking or correcting. It is about helping the dog understand where the sweet spot is — right beside you, leash relaxed, brain engaged.

Manners Glow Up students showing off their focus, confidence, and calm settle skills ✨

Adolescence doesn’t have to mean chaos with consistency, structure, and real-life practice, these pups are learning how to make better choices around friends, distractions, and excitement.

Big glow up energy from these two! 🐾

Congratulations to Joy and Cassie for completing Puppy Day School! 🎓🐾

These sweet girls worked hard, learned so much, and grew in confidence during their time with us. We are so proud of their progress and can’t wait to see them keep building on those puppy foundations!

Welcome to our newest Puppy School students! 🐾🎉

June sessions are officially FULL, and these sweet pups are already learning, playing, and building confidence.

Have a puppy? Now is the perfect time to get signed up and hold your spot for our next session before it fills too!

Puppy School is where the foundations begin: manners, confidence, socialization, focus, and learning how to be a great family dog. 💛

Joy and Finn LOVE to roughhouse, but as adolescence approaches, they’re starting to test boundaries. The nipping, biting, and dramatic little temper tantrums are their way of saying, “Can I get away with this?”

The answer is: nope. Not today, puppies.

This is why I love a good harness. Sometimes you have to safely hold your ground, prevent the rehearsal of the behavior, and wait for their brain to come back online. Yes, I become the sacrificial lamb for a minute, but the lesson is important:

Pulling, nipping, and fighting don’t get you freedom. Calm behavior does.

Once they settle, they learn that the best way to get what they want is to calm down, not escalate.

And yes, how you handle nipping and biting always depends on the dog, the age, the situation, and what’s driving the behavior. But for overstimulated puppies? Sometimes the answer is simple:

A nap. A reset. A little help learning how to regulate.

Puppies are funny, exhausting, and a whole lot of work — which is exactly why Puppy Day School is so helpful when you need an extra set of hands. 🐾

Building confidence, body awareness, and mental strength one obstacle at a time!

Bella, our high-energy Cavalier, has been working up to her last big obstacle — the teeter. She started on the baby teeter and today moved up to the full obstacle… and she nailed it! 🙌

Movement under a dog’s paws can feel really unsettling, so this was a big win for her confidence.

Agility isn’t just about speed — it’s about trust, courage, focus, and having fun together. 💛

Today we worked on down stays with a bouncing basketball — because real-life manners mean being able to stay calm even when exciting things are moving around.

This exercise helps dogs build:

✨ impulse control
✨ focus around motion
✨ patience
✨ calm body choices
✨ stronger stays with distractions

The goal is not perfection right away. The goal is teaching our dogs that exciting things can happen around them, and their job is to stay settled until released.

Good manners take practice — and sometimes a basketball. 🐶🏀 Great Job Copper!
