Joy and Finn LOVE to roughhouse, but as adolescence approaches, they’re starting to test boundaries. The nipping, biting, and dramatic little temper tantrums are their way of saying, “Can I get away with this?”
The answer is: nope. Not today, puppies.
This is why I love a good harness. Sometimes you have to safely hold your ground, prevent the rehearsal of the behavior, and wait for their brain to come back online. Yes, I become the sacrificial lamb for a minute, but the lesson is important:
Pulling, nipping, and fighting don’t get you freedom. Calm behavior does.
Once they settle, they learn that the best way to get what they want is to calm down, not escalate.
And yes, how you handle nipping and biting always depends on the dog, the age, the situation, and what’s driving the behavior. But for overstimulated puppies? Sometimes the answer is simple:
A nap. A reset. A little help learning how to regulate.
Puppies are funny, exhausting, and a whole lot of work — which is exactly why Puppy Day School is so helpful when you need an extra set of hands. 🐾
