Hey everyone my name is Amelia this is my first year in the BEHS training challenge with Rooster, a 13yo bay appendix gelding standing 16 hands. I was informed from previous owner he hasn't been worked in 9 years, has a history of kicking farriers due to a bad experience as a yearling. He had some training when he was 3 and only been worked in a round pen. Rooster stands good for a saddle, leads well and has a great mind. When I picked him up, he loaded okay but pulled back once tied and stood facing backwards for a while. After about an hour, he turned around and relaxed. Now that he's settled, we've been working on basic ground manners mainly patience (not pawing while tied), yielding his hind and forequarters, ground tying, flexing, picking up all 4s easily, lots of stretching to relieve stiffness, ground driving and backing to strengthen and engage his hindquarters to round his back. Big on respect. We had our first ride yesterday! Sadly I didn't get it on video. Although I lunged him first he was fresh as expected but settled down. I left him in his rope halter had him flex both ways, got on and off a few times, messed with the stirrups ect. we walked off keeping him in forward motion and circles to help him get used to carrying weight again. He has a nice jog and moves well in different directions, though he's a bit stiff in his face and has all go so we worked on rollbacks both ways to get him to think sit on his hind end for a better woah (handled it like a champ). When we loped off, he got a bit broncy, we worked through it lots of circles and ended the ride exactly how I wanted and was less than 20 minutes, nice and short. He's doing great and has a good mind with a spunky personality. He's very willing, loves to work, and enjoys scratches, just needs a lot more desensitizing, we have plenty to improve!
