BIRDS ARE MANIPULATIVE!

Whenever I do a talk on avian nutrition, I talk about why we MUST pay close attention to the wild: what birds eat, how they access food, how they consume their food. The species we keep are hardwired to do these things and we CANNOT undo that. Giving them a diet that’s mostly one type of food robs them of this. Diversity is everything.

When I say that birds are manipulative, I’m pointing to the simple fact that they have a series of physical and behavioral adaptations that allow them to carefully and precisely manipulate every piece of food they pick up and eat. This engages their body and their mind…. This is the core of enrichment.

Any time someone says that our birds should be on a mostly pelleted diet, I remind them of these simple truths. BIRDS ARE MANIPULATIVE… as they should be!
