Allergy and infection symptoms can look similar at a glance, but here's how you can spot the difference:

Allergies:
🔹 Clear, watery discharge, typically occuring in both eyes
🔹 Often accompanied by itching & sneezing

Infections:
🔹 Thicker yellow or green discharge, usually presenting in one eye first
🔹 Pet may be squinting or keeping the eye closed due to pain

Evelynn recently stopped by for treatment of her feline herpesvirus – the most common cause of chronic conjunctivitis in cats.

As you can tell, Elliot is doing great after his cataract surgery. 😆

His family are dedicated fosters with the Dachshund Rescue of North America, a group that does incredible work giving dachshunds, especially seniors, a second chance at finding loving homes.

We’re always inspired by the compassion and commitment it takes to foster, and grateful for the people who open their homes to these feisty little pups. 🥰

If you’re looking to adopt or support, be sure to check them out.

Earlier this month Dr. Brookshire visited the Virginia Beach Animal Control and Adoption Center () to see Melon. 👁️

Melon had an eyelid mass removed and needed follow-up care to ensure proper healing and comfort. Cases like this can benefit from specialized ophthalmic equipment and expertise to closely evaluate the eye.

He’s now doing much better and on the road to healing. 💛

Melon is an adult male pit mix (5–8 years old), about 60 lbs, and full of personality – active, friendly, and ready for a home of his own. 🐶

If you’re interested in giving him the fresh start he deserves, please reach out to to learn more.

👁️These are the eyes of an 11-year-old dog with diabetes who came to us with advanced cataracts causing vision loss.

We performed cataract surgery to remove the cloudy lenses and replace them with artificial lenses, helping to restore vision.

Cataracts develop when the normally clear lens becomes cloudy, preventing light from properly reaching the retina. They most commonly form due to genetics, but can also be caused by diabetes, inflammation, trauma, or nutritional factors.

With the right care, surgery can help restore vision and allow pets to confidently navigate their world again. 🐾
