Tech Thursday:
Bandages play an important role in veterinary medicine by protecting wounds, controlling bleeding, reducing swelling, and supporting the healing process. From pressure bandages to splints, proper bandage placement and regular monitoring are vital for ensuring patient comfort, promoting healing, and preventing complications such as swelling, irritation, and restricted circulation.

A little extra care goes a long way in keeping our patients comfortable and on the road to recovery! 🐶🐱🩵

🚨A veterinary emergency is a condition that could threaten an animal’s life, cause severe pain, lead to permanent damage, or rapidly worsen if treatment is delayed.

These patients should be directed to a veterinary emergency hospital rather than waiting for a routine appointment at a primary care clinic. 🚨

Tech Thursday:
Ultrasound guided cystocentesis is a great, minimally invasive way to safely collect urine samples from our patients. Using ultrasound helps us visualize the bladder’s structure as a whole while also making it easier to guide the needle into the right spot avoiding other surrounding organs. It’s especially helpful when the bladder is small or difficult to palpate during the exam. This technique allows us to collect a sterile urine sample which improves diagnostic accuracy.

With Halloween around the corner, remember that chocolate treats and candy can be very harmful to our furry friends! 🐾

Chocolate contains theobromine and caffeine, two compounds known as “methylxanthines” that stimulate the heart and nervous system. Because dogs and cats metabolize these substances much more slowly than humans, it makes them toxic to both species.

Prevention is key! Keep candy bowls, trick-or-treat bags, and chocolate wrappers out of reach, and remind children not to share Halloween treats with pets. Dark chocolate, unsweetened baking chocolate, and cocoa powder are especially dangerous due to their higher methylxanthine content.

Think your pet got into the candy stash? Contact your veterinarian or the Pet Poison Hotline at 1-800-213-6680 immediately. Don’t wait for symptoms to appear, and never induce vomiting unless instructed by a veterinary professional. Be ready to share your pet’s weight, the type and estimated amount of chocolate eaten, and when ingestion occurred.
