🐻 Sugar Bear is a 10 month old Rottweiler seen for her post-surgery recheck with Dr. Palmer-Greenberg in our Chesapeake office. We met Sugar Bear earlier this month when she was experiencing excessive tearing and squinting due to a superficial ulcer caused by entropion (rolling in of the eyelids). Surgical correction was a success and Sugar Bear is doing great!

🐾 Are you surprised to learn that high blood pressure is one of the leading causes of sudden vision loss in older pets?

➡️ Hypertension can happen on its own or develop secondary to conditions like kidney disease or thyroid tumors. When blood pressure gets too high, fluid can leak under the retina (the delicate layer in the back of the eye responsible for vision) and can cause retinal detachment and blindness.

In some pets, bleeding inside the eye or retinal tears can further reduce the chance of vision returning, even after blood pressure is controlled.

Signs to watch for:
• Sudden blindness
• Dilated pupils
• Bumping into things
• Blood visible in the eye

➡️ Early diagnosis and treatment are critical. Routine blood pressure checks can help protect your pet’s vision.

🐾 Kaiser was seen for an OFA screening exam in our Virginia Beach office with Dr. Church. 🗒️ The OFA Companion Animal Eye Registry (CAER) is a vital tool for breeders, helping them make informed decisions to ensure healthier dogs. By collecting data on canine eye diseases, we contribute to understanding trends and breed susceptibility.

🐾Check out these results! Thor underwent corrective surgery for nictitans gland prolapse (more commonly referred to as cherry eye) in his left eye with Dr. Palmer-Greenberg in our Chesapeake office. We often see this condition in Cane Corsos. Thor is doing great!
