A Tribute for Rio šŸ’ššŸ¾

"Every dog takes a little piece of your heart when they pass, but there are some that take more because they are extra special. For me, that was my girl Rio. Her passing in 2024 was unexpected and sudden. I miss her every day and still can’t talk about her without crying."

Confusion, restlessness, sleep changes, house soiling, or increased anxiety can sometimes be signs of cognitive decline in senior dogs.

In this short video, Dr. Chelsea McGivney explains what families may notice, what these changes can mean, and why seeing these signs does not automatically mean it is time to say goodbye.

Understanding what your pet is experiencing can help you make informed decisions about their comfort, care, and next steps.

This video is part of our growing Pathway to Care educational library for families navigating their pet’s senior years.

National Grief Awareness Day
August 30, 2026

Grief can begin before a beloved pet's final goodbye.
It can follow a loss.
It can surface weeks, months, or even years later.

It can look like sadness, loneliness, anger, guilt, relief, or simply missing the familiar presence of a beloved companion.

And sometimes, it can be difficult to explain to someone who hasn't experienced the loss of a pet.

However grief shows up for you, your loss matters.

At Caring Pathways, we understand that the bond we share with our animal companions is deeply meaningful—and saying goodbye can be incredibly difficult.

We had a wonderful time at Pals, Paws, and Pints this past Saturday! šŸ¾šŸ»

Our Hampton Roads Veterinary Hospice team loved connecting with the community and sharing how comfort-focused care can support senior and geriatric pets and the families who love them.

A heartfelt thank-you to our hospital partner, Churchland Animal Clinic , for organizing such an incredible event and inviting us to participate. We’re also grateful to everyone who stopped by our booth to say hello, ask questions, and learn more about in home veterinary hospice and end-of-life care.

It was an honor to spend the afternoon with so many wonderful people, pets, and local organizations! šŸ’š

Every animal we love leaves behind a story worth remembering. 🐾

Their story lives on in the memories we hold, the routines they shaped, the laughter they brought, and the love they gave so freely.

When we’re grieving, remembering can be a meaningful part of healing. There is no timeline for grief—only the time it takes to honor a bond that mattered. šŸ’š

When a beloved pet is aging or living with serious or chronic illness, it’s natural to wonder, Are they comfortable? Am I doing enough?

In-home comfort care is designed to help answer those questions.
Comfort care, also called hospice or palliative care, focuses on your pet’s quality of life, helping ease pain and other symptoms, support mobility and nutrition, reduce anxiety, and make everyday life more comfortable.

It’s also about supporting you. A personalized comfort care plan can provide practical tools, guidance, and peace of mind as your pet’s needs change.
And perhaps most importantly, comfort care is not about giving up. It’s about giving more—more comfort, more dignity, more closeness, and more good days together.

Because when your pet is comfortable, you can spend less time worrying and more time simply being together.

Comfort is Care. Comfort is Love.šŸ’ššŸ¾
