A common question- "What is spondylosis and how did my pet get this"?

Spondylosis in simple terms is arthritis of the spine. It is a chronic, degenerative process where the body grows boney like bridges along the bottom of the vertebrae (the spine).

How did this happen?
Repetitive wear and tear through normal life movements, injuries with no subluxation resolution causing spinal discs and joints to weaken. This can cause pain and the animal will begin to walk differently usually more movement in a specific area. This increased movement is looked at to the body as instability.

When this occurs the body decides to fix the instability by bridging the spine.

The Result: Spine fusion

What are the symptoms?
~Stiffness when waking up or getting up from rest.
~Reluctance to jump into the car, onto the couch, or climb stairs.
~A change in gait, such as a stiff legged walk or a hunched back.
~ Painful or crying out when touched along the back.

How to diagnose?
~ Radiographs

How to treat traditional?
~Limit exercise in a life long condition
~NSAIDS to decrease pain

How to treat holistically?
~Chiropractic care: Can help manage pain and improve mobility by mobilizing stiff spinal joints, reduce compensatory muscle spasms, and ease facet joint pain.
~Laser: Increase blood flow and decrease inflammation at the cellular level.
~FSM therapy: Reduce inflammation, bring blood flow to the facets/discs, ease muslce spasms, reduce pain of the nerves.

Jump with Joy will be offering non-anesthetic dentals. These are dentals for older patients who have prior concerns (heart, kidney etc.), pets with sensitivities to anesthesia, or owners are nervous to place pets under anesthesia. This is a good alternative as long as your pet does not need extractions, isn't suspicious of oral abscesses, or have loose canines or molars. If you are interested in a dental for the month of October or November please call us at (757)417-7730 or send us an email at [email protected]. Prior to the dental we do require a separate appointment for examination and candidate determination as well. 🐾

Starting 12 October 2026, we are Happy to announce that Jump With Joy Chiropractic will be moved to its own fully operational stand alone location, located at the building formally known as The Center of Animal Healing and will no longer be performing at home visits for all future care. November was adopt a senior dog month. For those who adopted great job! You have a big heart and I’d like to say for the senior dogs thank you for giving them a chance at a happy life again I am pretty sure they are so grateful.

Now that you’ve had them for a couple weeks to a month you may have now noticed common senior problems. Slow to rising or difficulty rising after sleeping or a nap. Disinterested in walking for long distances, trouble going up and down the stairs this could be walking up the stairs stiff, slowly walking the stairs, showing pain or grunting while walking the stairs or right after, or tripping when going down the stairs, even avoiding the stairs. Stiff gait at a walk or jog, disliking to jog. Stiff shoulders not able to get good stretches or fully extend the shoulders, stiff elbows not able to flex the forearms as much, hearing joint pops when pet is stretching, walking, or getting up from sleeping, dripping urine in the house(urinary inconsistence), etc.

A lot of times when owners start to see these issues they do not know what to do. Common questions are: Do they need pain medication? Are you walking them too much? Why are they dripping urine in the house are there medications for that what should you do?

There are medications to help alleviate the symptoms of all of these things. There’s also chiropractic care. If your pet has severe pain it’s possible to use both to get them to a good plain to start them going and chiropractic care can correct the abnormalities that cause the symptoms so we can keep them going with maintenance!
