We’ve been putting in work on Maryland’s Eastern Shore recently, with a heavy focus on open-air sniffs and real-world traffic stop scenarios.
The objective: allow the K9 to independently work the exterior of the vehicle—without handler presentations and without the K9 entering the vehicle to prevent the perception of a search.
If proactive traffic enforcement is part of your mission, your detection training should reflect it. Open-air sniffs shouldn’t be something your dog only sees occasionally. Build them into your training plan and replicate the conditions your K9 team will actually encounter on the street.
And yes—I’m aware of the change of behavior at the beginning of the detection scenario.
That’s exactly why we run scenarios blind for the handler.
Train for the deployment, not just the certification.
