September is Animal Pain Awareness Month. 🐾

Pets can be surprisingly good at hiding discomfort, which means pain does not always look like crying, limping, or refusing to move. Here are five subtle signs that are easy to overlook:

1️⃣ Sleeping more than usual. Extra naps can be fine, but a sudden change in energy may be your pet’s way of saying something feels off.

2️⃣ Avoiding stairs, jumping, or certain surfaces. Hesitating before getting on the couch or suddenly skipping the stairs may point to joint, muscle, or back pain.

3️⃣ Changes in grooming. Over-grooming one area can signal discomfort, while grooming less may mean movement has become painful.

4️⃣ Acting clingier or more distant. Some pets seek extra comfort when they hurt, others hide, avoid touch, or become unusually grumpy.

5️⃣ Changes in appetite or posture. Eating less, hunching, shifting weight, or sitting in an unusual position can all be clues.

You know your pet best. If their behavior changes, it is worth checking in, even when the signs seem small. If you’re in Virginia Beach or Hampton Roads, don’t hesitate to reach out to the Coastal Vet team if anything feels off. 💙

Happy National Dog Day! 🐶

In honor of one of our favorite holidays, let’s talk about five common pet care mistakes we see. And no judgment here! Truly. Dogs eat socks, humans miss things, and we’re all doing our best.

Here are five common pet care mistakes to avoid:

1️⃣ Waiting too long to schedule an appointment.

If something feels off, it’s always okay to call. Early care can make a big difference, and Coastal Vet members have access to same-day and next-day sick appointments.

2️⃣ Assuming limping is “just old age.”

Slowing down can come with age, but limping may point to pain, arthritis, an injury, or another issue worth checking out.

3️⃣ Skipping dental care.

Dog breath may be funny. Dental disease is not. 🦷 Regular dental care supports your pet’s comfort and overall health.

4️⃣ Giving human medications.

Some medications that are safe for people can be dangerous for pets. Always check with your veterinary team before sharing anything from the medicine cabinet.

5️⃣ Ignoring weight gain.

A few extra pounds can place added stress on joints, mobility, and overall health. We can help create a realistic plan tailored to your pet without banning every treat forever. 😉

Our goal is to help members feel informed, supported, and comfortable asking questions. If you’re ever unsure, don’t hesitate to reach out to us!

Happy to all the good dogs, goofy dogs, sleepy dogs, and “I definitely did not eat that” dogs. 🐾💙

✨Pet of the Week ✨

Hi everyone, I’m Jake! 🐶💙 I’m a 5-and-a-half-year-old Golden Retriever, and my family says I’m sweet, loving, and always happy. I’d say they’re absolutely correct. 😉

My hidden talent is a pretty special one: I provide therapy for kids at CHKD! I love sharing comfort, cuddles, and plenty of Golden Retriever smiles wherever I go. 🐾

Of course, even therapy dogs have their mischievous moments. Mine? I once peed on my mom’s leg. 🙈 Let’s just say it was not my finest professional achievement.

Thanks for getting to know me! I hope your day is filled with tail wags, belly rubs, and something tasty to snack on. Woof woof for now! ✨

This is why the little things matter so much. 💙

Being there after hours, making space for a worried pet parent to sit beside their cat, and treating every patient like one of our own, that’s the kind of care our team works hard to provide every day at Coastal Vet in Virginia Beach.

Jessica, thank you for trusting our team during such a scary time. We’re so grateful your sweet boy is back to feeling like himself. 🐾

Meet Jessica, one of the friendly faces helping our members feel right at home at Coastal Vet in Virginia Beach! 💙🐾

Jessica joins us as a Client Service Representative with six years of veterinary medicine experience. She has worked both as a veterinary assistant and in client service, giving her a special understanding of what pets, their families, and veterinary teams need during every visit.

What drew Jessica to Coastal Vet in Hampton Roads was our open, personalized approach to care. As a devoted pet mom herself, she loves that members can stay involved throughout their pet’s visit instead of wondering what is happening behind closed doors. That transparency helps create a more comfortable, connected experience for everyone.

One of Jessica’s favorite things about Coastal Vet is how our team knows so many members and pets by name. Around here, you are never just another appointment, you are part of the Coastal Vet family. 🥰

At home, Jessica stays plenty busy with three rescue dogs, two rescue cats, three amazing kids, and a husband who also works in veterinary urgent care. Basically, caring for animals is the family business! 🐶🐱

We are so excited to have Jessica on the team. Be sure to say hello to her the next time you visit! 💙
