Here at River Ridge Stable we get a lot of horses that are hard workers. They are in a discipline that requires them to be, " on" so to speak, and in a hightened state. Its not something we want to change here, but when on the tread it can translate into a horse that may not use the tread to its fullest potential. The tread is hard work for sure, but we want a very focused horse that is using their whole body and reaching. Sometimes when they are in "work mode" they will hurry the tread. This results in a shortened stride and raised head, and usually will accompany slipping and weaving. We will work with them to get them to relax (still work hard), but allow that stretched out flat movement we know benefits them the most. Video one is an example of choppy movement and wanting to hurry through the workout. The video in the comments shows after a couple of minutes of repositioning we increased our reach a little and relaxed into that more correct movement. They are so smart and willing to trust the process. 🌊💪🏼❤️🫶🏼

The most important aspects of a tread session are cadence, straightness, and consistency. Many times we have a horse that consistently slips. This disrupts all three important factors. When we see this happen, it is important to figure out the why behind the slipping. It may take many sessions to figure out the correct approach to fixing that.
I have found in most cases the horse is hurrying the tread, and not thinking about proper foot placement. We want a steady reaching gate, but if they do not have the skill set to do that, we need to take a step back and retrain the horse to use their body correctly. It is a great feeling when they repeat this enough to correct themselves so they can move on to a more advanced workout. 👏🏻👏🏻🙌🏼🙌🏼🌊💪🏼💪🏼💪🏼

Each tread session is a valuable tool to collect information about your horse and issues they may be having.
Today we are concentrating on heavy foot fall. What can this mean?
Heavy footfall in horses—is typically a secondary sign of an underlying neurological condition, mechanical gait fault, or compensatory orthopedic lameness. When a horse's hoof strikes the ground unusually hard, it is often because they cannot feel where their foot is in space (proprioceptive deficit) What can this mean?
If the heavy footfall happens specifically when a hind leg is thrown forward and then sharply je**ed back and "slapped" onto the ground, it points to fibrotic myopathy (muscle tearing or scarring in the hindquarters). Or
Neurological Symptoms (Dysmetria & Proprioception Loss)
If the heavy footfall is due to a nervous system condition (like CVSM / Wobbler Syndrome, EPM, or EDM), the heavy landing is caused by dysmetria—an inability to regulate the rate, range, and force of movement.
These are a couple of the most common reasons, but not all.
This makes is necessary to have a vet involved to help narrow down what could be happening. Questions we can ask:
At what water level/speed is it most noticeable?
Does the heavy landing improve or worsen by the end of the session? This can be valuable information for your vet team when attempting to diagnose your horse.
Here at RRS we try our best to watch for everything. Your horses health and well-being are our first priority. 🌊

What does water level and speed do specifically?
I have noticed that each horse needs specific workouts for specific needs.
Is your horse lacking muscle and topline?
Is your horse bulky or maybe on the chubby side?😉
High water and a fast pace is NOT the goal for every horse.
We make goals for your horse after we evaluate and watch them closely. Each one of those goals is tailored to your horses needs on THAT day.
The general rule is:
Low and slow we are building muscle and coordination.
High and fast we are streamling and pushing them because they are ready for that challenge. The tread is so versatile that we can mix both variables in one session or maintain a steady experience throughout.
Let's us bring out your horses full potential at

At River Ridge Stable, we combine advanced aquatic therapy with proven conditioning techniques to support each horse’s unique training goals.

What kind of changes can you expect with Aquatread training/therapy week by week?
Of course it varies case by case, BUT...
Week one: noticeable change in body stability, the beginnings of muscle building and refining in over built areas.
Week two: Compensation patterns are correcting, core and back muscles are firing up and becoming more functional.
Week three: Our bulky horses start to begin to refine and streamline muscle, stabilizing muscles are strong and are working in tandem with the larger movement muscles creating a firm foundation for correct fluid limb movement.
In our thinner horses this is when we see some considerable muscle growth and top line improvement along with the strong stabilizing muscles and movement muscles working together correctly.
Week four: This is where the magic happens. Everything comes together and we see a drastic change in body function and form. Your horse is at or very close to its optimal body condition with all systems locked into each other and working in sync. You will see a significantly different animal coming home than the one you dropped off! 💪🏽💪🏽🌊🌊

Bodywork before the tread.
This is beneficial because if we can work the body into a more correct pattern and then tread them to instill that correctness we are ahead of the game.
This horse was a bit short strided in the front and not riding the tread back like I want.
After some body work and a nice shoulder release his stride increased on the tread. Winning!!
