⚠️ A HIDDEN YARD HAZARD FOR GRASS-EATING DOGS ⚠️

Does your dog like to nibble grass? While grazing, dogs can accidentally eat wild mushrooms growing in the lawn. The danger may be even harder to spot after mowing, because a lawn mower can shred mushrooms into small pieces and scatter them among the grass clippings.

If you didn’t see your dog eat a mushroom, unusual symptoms may be your first clue. Watch for:

🍄 Appearing dazed, disoriented or staring at things strangely
🍄 Dilated pupils or glossy-looking eyes
🍄 Restlessness, agitation or unusual vocalizing
🍄 Stumbling, weakness or difficulty standing
🍄 Trembling, muscle tremors, violent shaking or seizures
🍄 Excessive drooling
🍄 Vomiting or diarrhea
🍄 Sudden or uncontrolled urination or defecation
🍄 Lethargy, collapse or difficulty breathing

Symptoms vary depending on the mushroom and may begin quickly or be delayed for hours. Not every dog will show every symptom.

Because wild mushrooms are extremely difficult to identify and some are highly toxic, check your yard regularly—especially after warm, wet weather—and remove mushrooms, visible fragments and potentially contaminated grass clippings before allowing pets outside.

If you know or suspect that your dog ate a wild mushroom—or your dog suddenly displays any of these symptoms—contact your veterinarian or an emergency veterinary hospital immediately. Do not wait to see if the symptoms improve, and do not induce vomiting or give a home remedy unless directed by a veterinary professional.

If possible, take clear photos of any mushrooms still present and save a sample, but never delay seeking care.
