πΎπΎ PRAIRIE DOG BUYERS BEWARE! πΎπΎ
π¨ Just because someone calls it a BABY doesn't mean it actually is! π¨
Here at The Lizard Lounge Exotic Pets, we believe in educating our customers and making sure people know exactly what they're purchasing!
We've noticed quite a few people advertising prairie dogs as "babies" or "newborns," and we want to clear up some misinformation!
πΎ WHEN ARE PRAIRIE DOGS ACTUALLY BORN?
Prairie dogs have a very specific breeding season!
π± Breeding Season: Generally January through March, depending on species and location.
π£ Birthing Season: Typically March through May.
πΎ Babies Emerge: Usually around April through June, when the young begin coming out of their burrows.
π SO WHAT ABOUT PRAIRIE DOGS BEING SOLD IN OCTOBER?
By this time of year, prairie dogs born during the normal breeding season are generally 5β8 months old!
They may still be young juveniles, but they are NOT newborn babies or recently weaned pups!
β οΈ WHY DOES THIS MATTER?
Prairie dogs require proper socialization, specialized diets, and knowledgeable care. Their age can make a big difference in their behavior, bonding, and adjustment to a new home.
Unfortunately, some sellers may advertise older prairie dogs as tiny babies to make them more appealing to buyers.
π OUR ADVICE?
Before purchasing a prairie dog, ALWAYS ask for its date of birth, how long it has been weaned, and where it originated.
A reputable seller should be transparent about the animal's age and history.
We're not saying every seller is dishonest, but we ARE saying buyers deserve accurate information!
At The Lizard Lounge Exotic Pets, we're about more than selling exotic animals. We're about education, responsible ownership, and making sure these amazing creatures receive the care they deserve!
