I love the way Milk & Honey Doodles described a guardian home!! If you are interested and are within 30-60 minutes of Victorville, CA pm me!!
Let’s talk about guardian homes and why they matter so much to our program 🤍
Guardian homes are something I stand behind wholeheartedly… but I also know they’re one of the most misunderstood parts of breeding.
So let’s break it down in real life terms.
A guardian home is when a family brings home one of our dogs as their own loved, spoiled, living the everyday life of a pet. We, as the breeder, retain breeding rights for a period of time. Once that chapter is finished, full ownership transfers completely to the family.
That’s it. That’s the big “controversial” thing people argue about online.
But here’s what it actually looks like from our side-
It looks like our dogs sleeping in beds, not kennels.
It looks like them having a family, not just a caretaker.
It looks like intentional numbers so we never become overwhelmed or stretched thin.
It allows us to keep our program small, personal, and done right.
And truthfully… we could not do this without our guardian families.
They are part of our program in the most important way. They love our dogs like their own (because they are their own), and they trust us enough to work alongside us. That’s not something I take lightly. Ever.
There’s a lot of drama on TikTok, Facebook, Instagram people calling out breeders who use guardian homes, trying to paint them as something negative.
And I just can’t wrap my head around that.
Because those same conversations will turn around and be outraged when a hoarding case hits the news… a breeder with 50, 80, 100+ dogs living in terrible conditions.
And rightfully so, that should upset people.
But you can’t be against systems that prevent that while also being outraged when it happens.
Guardian homes are one of the ways we make sure that never becomes our reality.
It’s a win-win the way we see it:
A family gets a beautiful, cream of the crop dog without the upfront cost.
And we’re able to continue building our program responsibly, without compromising the quality of life for our dogs.
No kennels. No overcrowding. No cutting corners.
Just intentional, ethical growth.
I have thick skin comments and those negative opinions don’t shake me. But I do think about the newer breeders watching all of that criticism, and choosing not to use guardian homes out of fear and then struggling to manage more dogs than they realistically should.
That’s where things start to go wrong.
At the end of the day, everything we do comes back to one thing:
doing right by our dogs.
And for us, this is part of that.
If you’ve ever been one of our guardian families, just know we are so, so grateful for you. You are part of something bigger than just “having a dog.” You’re part of the heart of this program 🤍
And if you’re curious about becoming one, or just want to understand it better I’m always happy to have that conversation.
Let’s keep it real, let’s keep it ethical, and let’s keep these dogs exactly where they belong… in homes, not in rows.
✨ Also, a little PSA while we’re here.
I truly don’t mind my content being shared I love that it resonates and feels relatable to your program. But if you’re going to copy and paste my words, please tag me and give credit where it’s due ✨
