So one question I get goes like this, “Doc I’ve gotta lame bull/cow I need you to come look at. When can you come out?” My response is typically that I very rarely can “fix” a lameness with one visit so I need them in clinic for proper care. Here’s a typical example. This bull after much investigation was discovered to have a sub solar hoof abscess that needed hoof sole excision. A wooden block is then adhered to the good claw to elevate the affected claw and allow healing. This process with bandages and aftercare can take 2-4 weeks, with a great prognosis. The last pic is what it looks like after the first bandage change.
Secondly…public school is out for summer break so “Life” School has started for my daughters. We started them off with BSE’s.

What an interesting case! This horse was a little lacking on body condition. Owner informed me that he was kicked in the face as a c**t and this poor guy had atrophy of his left masseter muscles. Because of this, he started “pulling” his jaw to the right, which ultimately resulted in a shear angle of his cheek teeth only on that side and a malocclusion. This horse was floated by a lay dentist and extremely overfloated on the first premolars with absolutely no attempt at correction of the shear. Obviously this is not a one and done type abnormality to fix, but we started him in a better direction. This horse’s mandible would slide one direction and “lock” in the other direction which causes him to drop feed and in turn he loses weight. Interesting huh?!

Well the wheels actually came off! Squeeze chute is now back in order after a wheel bearing/damaged spindle was fixed. Special thanks to a couple of great clients for helping us get her home! Sometimes you just feel stuck! But who “nose” tomorrow will be better. I’m not going to “ hoof”and p**f about it, just gotta keep workin’. Y’all have a great week. (See what I did there?)

We’ve been busy and pens are staying full. This little bull calf was brought in with a radius/ulna fracture. After sedation a Thomas splint was applied to keep the break in traction. This little fella got weaned the day he was caught and is doing great! In other news, the lower pics are of an interdigital fibroma that was surgically removed and after a few weeks of aftercare is healing nicely. I hope sll your fall cattle work goes smoothly and be safe. God Bless!

So with a recent case, owners brought a liver sample to me. This animal was infested with liver flukes and had been dewormed in June with an generic Ivermectin plus. Understanding the life cycle of the liver fluke is vital to understanding how to control them. Flukicidal dewormers such as ivomec plus or valbazen are best suited for early fall working so that the flukes are at the L4 stage(as this is the only time the dewormer is effective). Notice the fibrosis around the tracts these flukes made and the scarring of this liver! If you have areas of low land or drainage on your place, you probably have snails and therefore likely have liver flukes. Just a little tidbit for the coming fall workings. PS…we might have some ivomec plus resistance issues in this group. Have a great week folks!

Sometimes a cut can be more than meets the eye. The circled area is actually a lacerated tendon sheath. A drain tube is placed to allow lavaging snd after multiple bandages, the bull went home sporting a cast for support for a few weeks. Video of the drain placement will follow.

This is a pic of an interdigital fibroma that was surgically excised from a bull’s foot. The cruciate ligaments were terribly infected and the bull was mildly lame. A few bandages, antibiotics, and time and he’ll be ready to go. Second pic was a candid sent to us by a client after fertility testing bulls. If you own cows and have never checked your bull we need to talk. Have a great day and enjoy this beautiful two days of fall!
