🦟🌧️ With all the recent rain, mosquito populations are exploding!

Mosquitoes are not only annoying for our pets 🐶🐱 — they can also spread serious diseases, including ❤️ Heartworm Disease ❤️.

Since the introduction of oral flea and tick preventions (which are fantastic products 👏), we’ve lost some of the repellant activity that many older topical products provided against mosquitoes and flies.

So what are our options? 🤔

✅ Continue year-round heartworm prevention and flea/tick prevention as recommended by your veterinarian 🩺

✅ Natural repellants 🌿
Some pet owners have had success with products containing cedar oil and other essential oil blends such as:
• VetriScience Vetri-Repel®
• Wondercide®
• Cedarcide®
• Vet’s Best®
• Kin+Kind®

⚠️ Important: Most natural products are REPELLANTS, not insecticidal (“cidal”) products. This means they may help repel mosquitoes, fleas, and ticks, but they do NOT replace your veterinarian-recommended heartworm, flea, and tick prevention products ❤️

⚠️ Also remember: essential oils can be irritating or toxic if used improperly — especially in cats 🐱. Always discuss safety with your veterinarian before use.

✅ Permethrin-containing repellants for DOGS ONLY 🐶
These products can provide excellent mosquito, tick, and fly repellency:
• K9 Advantix II®
• Vectra 3D®
• Advecta 3®

🚫 NEVER use permethrin products on cats.
Permethrins can be highly toxic — even fatal — to felines.

✅ Environmental mosquito control 🏡
Treating yards and outdoor areas with appropriate mosquito-control products can dramatically reduce mosquito populations around the home.

📚🐾 Old school or still the gold standard?

Here’s a behind-the-scenes look at how I plan veterinary cases — and yes, sometimes that still means pulling out an actual book. In a world full of apps, AI, and online resources, there’s still something valuable about flipping through trusted veterinary references while working through complex cases.

Do you still use books in veterinary medicine, or has everything gone digital for you? 👀👇

Not every veterinarian tapes in IV catheters the same way — and that’s perfectly okay 👌🐾

There are several effective methods depending on clinician preference, patient size, catheter type, and the fluid or extension setup being used. This is simply one technique that has worked well for me in practice 🩺

I like this approach because it provides secure stabilization while still leaving room for a variety of connections, extension sets, injection ports, and fluid lines 🔗💉 without creating excessive bulk around the catheter hub.

The goal is always the same:
✅ Maintain catheter security
✅ Reduce movement and tension
✅ Keep the setup clean, functional, and adaptable

Just sharing another practical option that may work well in your hands too 👨‍⚕️👩‍⚕️🐶🐱

🦷 Mystery Patient Challenge

This little guy came in with swelling just under one eye. During a sedated exam, we found a tooth root abscess. Two molars were removed, the abscess was flushed, and medications were started.

The penny is for size comparison. This pet is full grown, and these are his molars.

🐾 What species do you think these teeth came from?

Drop your guesses below. I’ll post the answer later!
