Horses Helping People Help Themselves

The rhythmical, three dimensional movement of the horse at a walk stimulates movement to the rider that is similar to human walking. The total development of the rider, including their social, emotional, cognitive and motor skills, are enhanced through interactions with the horses, the volunteers and the outdoors.

The benefits of therapeutic riding extend far beyond physical exercise. At Crossroads Therapeutic Equestrian Center (CTEC), our therapy horses provide a non-judgmental, accepting partnership that opens new doors for emotional and social growth.

Equine-assisted activities help riders:
🌟 Build Self-Esteem: Mastering the skills needed to guide a 1,000-pound animal creates an incredible sense of personal empowerment.

💓 Enhance Emotional Regulation: Horses possess an extraordinary ability to sense and sync with human heartbeats from yards away. Because they naturally mirror our internal nervous systems, sitting near or riding a calm therapy horse helps riders regulate their own heart rates, settle anxiety, and ground their emotions in real time.

🗣️ Develop Communication: Non-verbal connection with horses encourages speech development, active listening, and social interaction with instructors and volunteers.

In our arena, breakthroughs happen every single day—whether it's a first spoken word, a quiet moment of calm, or a giant smile after completing an obstacle course!

For many riders at Crossroads Therapeutic Equestrian Center (CTEC), connecting with people can sometimes feel overwhelming or difficult. But the moment they step up to one of our horses, all of that pressure melts away.

Our horses don't judge, rush, or expect anything other than genuine partnership. They listen with their ears, respond to gentle touches, and offer a steady, reassuring heartbeat to riders navigating anxiety, physical challenges, or developmental delays. They are confidants, healers, and unwavering friends.

Because our horses give so much unconditional love in the arena, we are dedicated to giving them the highest quality of life outside of it. Through our Horse Heroes Program, you can sponsor one of these gentle giants—covering their vital monthly feed, farrier care, and health supplements with sponsorship options from $50 up to $250.

Did you know that riding a horse simulates the exact 3D movement of the human walk? At Crossroads Therapeutic Equestrian Center (CTEC), therapeutic riding offers physical benefits that traditional clinic settings simply cannot replicate!

When a rider sits in the saddle, the horse’s rhythmic movement transmits subtle physical impulses into the rider's pelvis and core. Over time, this natural motion helps:
- Improve core strength, posture, and joint mobility
- Enhance gross and fine motor coordination
- Increase stamina, muscle tone, and flexibility
- Promote better sensory integration and balance

For many of our riders, these physical gains in the arena translate directly to greater independence in daily life—from sitting up taller at school to walking with a steadier stride!
