So happy researchers have found a new illness linked to marketed fresh petfoods. A little more evidence and an additional reason most vets agree these foods are horrible for dogs and responsible for most severe cases of pancreatitis, gall bladder problems and HGE syndrome. Well, fresh foods and eating trash or carcasses are primary causes of these issues…Dont be a victim of internet petfood marketing. Vets sell healthy dogs, not dog food. And we dont support diets that are proven to make so many pets sick!

The Minnesota Urolith Center has discovered a new type of urinary stone that is associated with supplements or diets containing a particular compound, called Calcium Tartrate Tetrahydrate.

Please see the informative summary of heartworm disease if you would like to understand why we do not have a risk in Teton Valley. Victor Vet recommends heartworm preventative for dogs that ever travel to warmer climates. Because the infective stage of the heartworm larva that is transmitted from dog to dog by mosquitos can only survive at temperatures that never go under 57 degrees for at least 2 weeks we do not, and likely will not, have a risk of transmission occuring locally. Another proven fact is that the larva will also die if it ever gets under 45 degress in a 45 day period. As our nights are cool in Teton Valley and Jackson Hole there is not a reason to prescribe local dogs preventative. Heartworm preventative monthly does have the benefit of also preventing many intestinal parasites and protecting dogs that travel east of wyoming or to the west coat from places that heartworm can be transmitted.
Victor Vet submits annual bloodwork on most of our canine patients over 7 years old and every sample is tested for heartworm and tick borne diseases including Lymes, Ehrlichia and Anaplasma. The vets in Jackson also participates in this long term blood test survey and we continue to affirm that those infections are not ever found in dogs without travel history.
We have and will continue to be vigilant and factual for any recommendations we make to protect our patients.

It's that time of year when Victor Vet gets multiple calls a day with people asking if their dogs have ring worm or lymes disease. These spots are actually benign bites from small black gnats that hang out in your nice green lawn. They cause a red circle that lasts a few days. Sometimes a small bump forms. They are of no real concern and rarely lead to any kind of itching or skin irritation. Posting here so we can tell everyone to look here and see if that's what they are finding on their dogs!

Spring is here! And with that comes a warning about Leptospirosis, a disease caused by infection with Leptospira bacteria.

All dogs are at risk of leptospirosis, regardless of age, breed, lifestyle, geographic location, time of year, and other factors. The following situations can increase that risk:

➡Exposure to or drinking from slow-moving or stagnant water sources, like ponds, rivers, lakes, or streams
➡ Roaming on rural properties (because of exposure to potentially infected wildlife or farm animals or urine-contaminated water sources)
➡ Exposure to wild animals (especially rodents) or farm animals, even if in the backyard
➡ Contact with other dogs (such as in urban areas, dog parks, or boarding or training facilities)

Avian Influenza can be fatal in cats. Consider putting a bell on your cat if they hunt migratory birds this spring and as always avoid raw dairy and meat as pet foods.
H5N1 symptoms in cats: Neurological symptoms, severe nasal/eye discharge, and lethargy/death.

Since the U.S. outbreak of avian influenza A (H5N1) in dairy cattle began in March 2024, dozens of cats are known to have contracted the virus, including barn and feral cats, indoor cats, and big cats in zoos and in the wild (e.g., mountain lions, tigers, leopards, and bobcats).
