A peaceful and quiet moment of reflection tonight. 16 years ago Cooperstown Kennels started with one little yellow female (Mays) and big goals. We have far surpassed those goals and set many new, more lofty ones. But as I sit here in my kennel building, on the eve of taking off on our first multi-week road trip to run the Triple Crown and another hunt test I can’t help but be a little emotional. My breeding and training programs are growing and evolving and improving, and I look out in the driveway at the dog truck and the new trailer, and then I look back at the old photos on the wall, a lot of emotions come to the fore. I can’t help but be proud, grateful, humble, happy, tired, but energized, and excited but not content. Thank you to everyone who has been and is along with me on this journey. I love this stuff.

Fun retriever work the past 2 days. Here is today’s land marks and blinds. Worked on walk-up mark, holding tight lines, and not caving to pickup the short bird with the left hand marks/blind. Right hand marks were run as singles, with the long gun retiring for the master dogs. Right blind was right next to the hay bale forcing the dogs to handle next to a deflecting object. Overall dogs did pretty well. Thanks to Jesse, Terry, and Don for helping throw birds.

Made it home from our family vacation/work trip out east where we picked up our new dog trailer from Mountain Top Custom Kennels.
The dogs are going to be riding in comfort and style! As we have been expanding our program here it was time for an upgrade. Can’t wait to load up the dogs tomorrow and get to work! Triple Crown here we come!

Ran some dogs at the Key City HRC test this past weekend. Thanks to the club, helpers, and judges for volunteering their time and all their hard work.

Rickey, Coupe and Waylon all picked up 2 more finished passes and 30 more championship points.

Jackie, our young star, earned another finished pass. Just one more for her HRCH title.

And our two started dogs, Reign and Sadie rocked it. Both earned 2 passes and their Started Hunting Retriever (SHR) titles! Nice job ladies!

One last post about last weekends HRC test. My two awesome employees, Sawyer and Damanick, have been busting their butts all summer doing everything from kennels chores to feeding birds to shooting flyers and planting chukars. They have even been training some obedience and working with the young dogs. Well, they both expressed an interest in handling some dogs so they both spent the past couple of weeks training and handling a couple of the young dogs. Then this past weekend I knew that they and the dogs were ready to go have some fun. Both young men and their dogs performed extremely well. I’m super happy these guys work for me and I’m proud of them for stepping up and running some dogs. Congrats boys, keep up the great work. We wouldn’t be where we are without you.

This past weekend we ran the Muddy Waters HRC test. We ran 11 dogs and a test dog so it was a busy weekend! Very challenging but fair tests and Overall the dogs did awesome. Super proud of these dogs.

Pretty awesome weekend here at Cooperstown Kennels, especially for our young stud Rickey. I will have updates on all the dogs and the weekend (and there are lots) but tonight I want to take a moment to celebrate what Rickey is doing this year.

On Friday Rickey, Addie and I tried our hand at our first Qualifying Field Trial. Well Rickey and I came away with a Reserve Jam. Then the next day (Saturday) and today (Sunday) we immediately jumped back into HRC Finished. Rickey crushed the tests both days. Many of you may not realize how challenging it is to do 150-250 yard multiple re-entry water marks one day and then turn around and have to sit steady and quiet for 15 yard in-breaking birds with duck calls and shotguns popping off at the line. Rickey handled it like a Pro!

So far this year Rickey has earned his Grand Master Pointing Retriever and Hunting Retriever Champion titles, passed his first AKC Master test and got an RJ in his first Qual. Yet he still rolls over on his back for anyone, especially kids, to get a belly rub. He truly embodies our “Versatile Hunting Companion” mantra. Way to go Rickey, AKA “Big Sexy”, aka “Tricky Rickey”, AKA “Richard”.
