💧 **Is your pet drinking enough water?**

Staying hydrated is important for your pet’s overall health—but how can you tell if they’re getting enough?

One commonly known trick is gently lifting the skin and watching how quickly it returns to place. While delayed return **can** be associated with dehydration, the “skin tent” test isn’t always reliable on its own—especially in senior pets. Other signs like dry or tacky gums, decreased energy, reduced appetite, or changes in urination can also be reasons to check in with your veterinarian.

Want to encourage your pet to drink more? Try these simple ideas:

💧 Keep multiple bowls of fresh water around the house.

⛲ Try a pet water fountain—some pets, especially cats, prefer moving water.

🧊 Add a few ice cubes for a little extra enrichment on warm days.

🥣 Add a small amount of **pet-safe, low-sodium broth** to their water or food. Always check the ingredients and avoid products containing onion or garlic.

🐾 And remember: **drinking significantly more OR less than usual can be important.** A sudden change in your pet’s thirst or urination deserves a conversation with your veterinarian.

🐾🧡 **Senior pets hold such a special place in our hearts.**

As our dogs and cats get older, their healthcare needs begin to change—and a little extra attention can go a long way toward keeping them happy and comfortable.

If your pet is entering their senior years, here are a few things to keep in mind:

🩺 **Consider wellness exams every 6 months.** Pets age much faster than we do, and a lot can change between visits.

👀 **Pay attention to subtle changes.** Drinking more water, sleeping more, changes in appetite, weight loss, difficulty with stairs, or slowing down shouldn’t always be dismissed as “just getting old.”

🧪 **Routine senior bloodwork matters.** Screening can help identify changes associated with conditions like kidney disease, thyroid disease, and diabetes—sometimes before obvious symptoms develop.

🦴 **Don’t overlook mobility.** Arthritis and joint discomfort are common as pets age. Nutrition, weight management, appropriate supplements, medications, and other therapies recommended by your veterinarian can make a big difference in comfort and quality of life.

🐾 **MYTH OR FACT:** Dogs and cats age 7 years for every 1 human year.

❌ **MYTH!**

Pet aging is actually a lot more complicated than the old “1 year = 7 years” rule—and the real numbers might surprise you!

🐶 A **1-year-old dog** is developmentally closer to a **15-year-old human**. After that first year, the aging rate slows down and can vary significantly depending on breed and size. In general, larger dogs tend to age faster than smaller dogs.

🐱 **Cats follow their own aging curve**, too—so the 7-year rule doesn’t work for them either!

Understanding your pet’s life stage can help you know what kind of preventive care, screening, nutrition, and lifestyle support they may need as they grow older.

🔴 CLOSED: 8:00 AM–7:30 PM
🟢 OPEN: 7:30 PM–8:00 AM

📅 Thursday, September 3
🔴 CLOSED: 8:00 AM–5:00 PM
🟢 Normal 24/7 operations will resume at 5:00 PM.

While we will not have a veterinarian available during these closure periods, staff will still be available to assist you with:
🐾 Emailing medical records to another veterinary hospital
🐾 Helping direct you to available clinics in the area
🐾 Coordinating the pickup of your pet’s ashes

We sincerely apologize for the inconvenience and understand how important it is to have emergency veterinary care available when your pet needs it. Our team will do everything we can to help connect you with appropriate care during these temporary closures.

🦷🐾 Did you know dental disease can start earlier than you might think?

By age 3, many dogs and cats already have some form of dental disease—and it’s about much more than just bad breath!

Keeping up with your pet’s dental health starts at home and with regular visits to your primary veterinarian:

🪥 Brush regularly with pet-safe toothpaste
🦴 Ask your veterinarian about appropriate dental chews or other dental-care products
👀 Keep an eye out for bad breath, red or bleeding gums, loose or broken teeth, facial swelling, or difficulty eating
🩺 Have your pet’s teeth and gums checked during routine wellness visits and discuss when a professional dental cleaning may be recommended

⚠️ And remember—dental problems can become emergencies. Facial swelling, significant bleeding, trauma to the mouth, a suddenly broken tooth, severe pain, or an inability to eat may need more urgent attention.
