Holly is 14 years old, and she’s spending her days in a shelter💔😭

We are so full, and behind every kennel door is a dog who needs someone. For Holly, that someone doesn’t need to offer big adventures — Just a soft bed, a space on the couch, and a family who will make her feel like she belongs.

This sweet girl makes friends with just about everyone—dogs, cats, and kids included! She has osteoarthritis and needs a family committed to keeping her comfortable and caring for her medical needs. Mostly, she just wants to rest beside someone who loves her❤️‍🩹

At 14, Holly shouldn’t have to keep waiting for her life to begin. PLEASE — Help us find her a home where she can be spoiled for every day she has ahead.

🚨 FINAL DAY. WE NEED HOMES. 🚨

Our shelter is completely full, and today is the last day of our adoption event.
Adoption fees are waived today for all adult animals over 1 year old. But more importantly, we need animals to find homes. We need to create space so we can continue helping animals who have nowhere else to go.

If you can adopt, please come to the shelter today. There are cats and dogs waiting for their chance to go home.

Shelter Scoop Sunday

Welcome back to Shelter Scoop Sunday, where we’re giving you a behind-the-scenes look at what happens at the Humane Society of Vero Beach & Indian River County.

There’s a lot more to sheltering animals than kennels and adoption. Our team also helps animals in our community who need a little extra help getting to the right place.

This week: our Wildlife Transport Hub.

We have injured and displaced wildlife brought to the shelter every day. While we aren’t a wildlife rehabilitation facility, we help make sure these animals get where they need to go by coordinating transport to wildlife rehabilitation providers and rescue partners.

One of our largest partners is Florida Wildlife Hospital, but we also work with amazing organizations right here in Vero Beach, including Joe-Rassic Park and the Gopher Tortoise Alliance. These partners help us find the right destination for wildlife in our care and provide valuable guidance on how to care for animals while they wait for transport.

And an important part of this process? Our wildlife transport volunteers. They help safely get animals from the shelter to their rehabilitation destination, making sure they can continue receiving the specialized care they need.

From squirrels and reptiles to birds and other wildlife, every animal requires a little something different. Our job is to help get them connected with the people who can give them the best chance at recovery and, when possible, a return to the wild.

We are out of space, and we need animals to find homes so we can make room for those who need our care.

Adoption fees are waived through Monday for all adult animals over 1 year old.

There are so many cats and dogs waiting at the shelter right now. If you’ve been considering adoption, please come meet them. Your new family member could be waiting for you.

FOUND: Another Sulcata tortoise has been brought to HSVB.

We recently reunited a Sulcata tortoise with their owner after they were brought to our shelter. Now, we have another one in our care after being found wandering.

If you recognize this tortoise or know who may be missing them, please contact the Humane Society of Vero Beach & Indian River County. Proof of ownership will be required for pickup.

At this time, we will not be accepting questions regarding the adoption process.

16 years old—and living in a shelter💔

No 16-year-old cat should be spending her golden years behind kennel doors, wondering where her family went or whether someone will ever choose her.

Meg came to the shelter as a stray. She is a sweet, chatty old lady with plenty to say and so much love left to give. She deserves soft blankets, sunny windows, cozy naps and someone who will treasure every day they have with her.

We cannot give Meg back the years she has already lost—but we can change what happens next.

Please help us get this beautiful senior out of the shelter and into a loving home today.

🚨 ADOPTION FEES WAIVED THROUGH MONDAY! 🚨

Our shelter is completely full, so adoption fees are waived today through Monday for all adult animals over 1 year old.

We currently have 88 adoptable cats and 71 adoptable dogs waiting for homes. That’s 159 animals looking for their chance to go home.

And the need is continuing to grow. Since September 7, we’ve had 90 animals come into our care, including 50 stray animal intakes.

⚠️ IMPORTANT: We cannot take in any more stray animals at this time.

We know this is difficult news for our community, but with our shelter at capacity, we simply do not have the space to safely take in additional animals. We need to get animals into homes so we can continue helping those who need us.

If you’ve been thinking about adopting, please come meet the animals waiting for their chance to go home.
