Update: unfortunwtely the guinea pig has passed

Post from a follower seeking assistance.

Refer to Alyssa Morales for more information

Hello, my name is Alyssa and I used to have two guinea pigs, one buttercup and then bubbles. Buttercup sadly passed due to a sickness I didn’t know of, now bubbles has the same thing and is gradually getting weaker and not eating. Vets for her cost about $120-170 for a check in and then another $1-200 to help her. I don’t want to rehome my baby immediately after she lost her sister. I’m low on funds because of rent but I fear if I wait any longer, she won’t live past a week. Anything will help and it will all go towards my guinea pig and getting her better.
Vets office I’ll be going to: Keene Veterinary Hospital.

🎉 WE HAVE OUR FIRST MATCH! 🎉

We are so incredibly grateful to announce that we just received our first $50 donation toward this week's matching goal.. which means it was instantly DOUBLED to $100 for the rescue!

This momentum couldn't come at a better time. We are already looking ahead to next week, where we have a sweet trio of piggies scheduled for a vet appointment. Knowing we have these matched funds ready to go means we can get them exactly the care they need without hesitation.

We still have $450 left in matching funds available this week! If you have been waiting for the perfect time to pitch in, this is it. If you donate $20, it becomes $40. If you donate $50, it becomes $100!

One thing I think is really important for guinea pig owners to understand is that vitamin C cookies, treats, and even fortified pellets are NOT always a reliable source of vitamin C long term.

Vitamin C is extremely unstable. It begins degrading when exposed to heat, light, air, and moisture. That means by the time those products are manufactured, shipped to warehouses, stocked on store shelves, and finally brought home, a significant portion of the vitamin C may already be gone. There is simply no way for us to know how much is actually left by the time our guinea pigs eat it.

This is why fresh vegetables should always be the primary source of vitamin C whenever possible. Foods like bell peppers, cilantro, parsley, and other guinea pig-safe veggies provide a much more natural and dependable source. Bell peppers in particular are one of the best daily options because they are high in vitamin C while also being relatively low in sugar.

Pellets should be viewed more as a nutritional backup, not the main source of vitamin C. And vitamin C cookies or treats are often marketed in ways that make owners feel like they are necessary, when in reality most healthy guinea pigs getting a proper diet do not need them at all.

Now, there ARE situations where supplementation can be beneficial. Sick guinea pigs, guinea pigs with poor appetite, dental issues, recovery cases, or pigs refusing veggies may need additional support. In those cases, my preferred supplement is ChildLife Essentials Liquid Vitamin C at 1 mL daily because it is easier to dose accurately and tends to be more reliable than relying on fortified treats.

At the end of the day, fresh hay, a balanced diet, and fresh vitamin C-rich vegetables will always be the foundation of good guinea pig nutrition. Supplements should support the diet when needed, not replace proper nutrition.

The more I look at my guinea pigs, the more confused I get as to how anyone can look at a guinea pig and feel anything less than complete adoration and love.

How can you look at that tiny face and neglect it? Dump it? Give it anything short of the best life possible?

Because I just don’t get it.

I would move heaven and earth for my guinea pigs. They are my babies.

Their happiness matters to me.
Their comfort matters to me.
Their tiny little feelings matter to me.

I notice when one seems quieter than normal.
I notice when someone skips a favorite veggie.
I notice the little personality changes nobody else would probably never see.

Because when you truly love them, you pay attention.

And no, I’m not talking about people who genuinely just don’t know better yet. I will always have patience for new owners who are willing to learn. We all start somewhere.

I’m talking about the countless people I run into on Facebook DAILY who are given kind advice and education and immediately respond with rudeness, sarcasm, defensiveness, or outright dismissal.

“Your wrong, my pig doesn’t need a friend.”
“My pig is fine in this pet store cage.”
“They’re just rodents.”
“He’s lived like this for years.”

Meanwhile the guinea pig is sitting alone in a tiny cage with nowhere to run, nothing to do, no enrichment, no companionship, and no understanding from the human responsible for them.

These animals are so emotionally intelligent, social, expressive, and full of personality.

They popcorn when they’re excited.
They scream for veggies the second they hear a bag crinkle.
They form bonds.
They grieve losses.
They trust us completely.

And somehow people still act like proper care is “spoiling” them.

What hurts the most is that guinea pigs cannot advocate for themselves. They cannot tell you they’re lonely. They cannot explain that their cage is too small or that they’re miserable sitting alone 24/7.

They depend entirely on us to care enough to listen and learn.

So when people refuse education out of pride, laziness, or ignorance, it genuinely breaks my heart for the animal stuck living that reality.

Because once you truly understand guinea pigs… once you really see them for the loving, emotional little creatures they are… I honestly don’t understand how you could ever settle for giving them anything less than the world.

People love to say, “They’re just guinea pigs.”

But to me?

They are family.
They are comfort on hard days.
They are tiny wheeking alarms demanding vegetables like their lives depend on it.
They are little souls with personalities bigger than their bodies.

And every single one of them deserves a life filled with safety, love, companionship, and happiness.

I would do absolutely anything for mine.

Let’s talk about guinea pig eyes specifically hay poke.

Hay poke is exactly what it sounds like: a piece of hay (or another foreign object) scratches or pokes the eye. Guinea pigs bury themselves in hay constantly, so unfortunately it’s pretty common. Signs can include squinting, excessive tearing, white discharge, redness, keeping the eye partially closed, or acting sensitive to light.

You will want to carefully remove any foreign debris you can safely and easily get to.

Mild hay pokes can sometimes be treated at home with supportive care. I personally use Optixcare eye l**e to keep the eye lubricated and Terramycin ointment to help prevent infection while the eye heals.

That being said if the eye worsens, starts bulging, becomes cloudy, develops thick discharge, or does not noticeably improve within about a week, veterinary assistance is absolutely required. Eye issues can go downhill very fast in guinea pigs, and ulcers or infections need professional treatment.

Please remember this is not a substitute for veterinary care. Supportive care can help minor irritation, but persistent eye issues should always be taken seriously.

Update in Shakira. Her eye is doing so much better with some treatment of eye l**e, and terramycin. Her feet are also still looking beautiful, after healing the bumblefoot.
