EMERGENCY PET PROMOTION! 286 stray animals have arrived at Ventura County shelters in the month of September. Adoption fees for all pets are waived at both shelter locations in an effort to ease crowding.

View pets here: vcas.us/pets

A crowded shelter means higher stress levels, and an increased risk of infection/physical and behavioral decline for animals in our care. Our staff and volunteers leave each night with no open kennels, wondering where we will place incoming animals (an average of 22 per day) that continue to arrive. Here's how you can help:

1. ADOPT. We have 200+ adoptable dogs between our locations. Both are open from 1-6PM , 7 days a week for adoptions. Our greatest need is for medium - large dog adopters. We have many dogs who have positive notes with people and other dogs!
2. FOSTER: Could you host a medium-large dog for 5-7 days, or longer? Fill out our foster availability form here: https://forms.gle/NYyxbxcEC9c3ecr47
3. We ask that those who find lost dogs to attempt reunification outside of the shelter if possible. Best practices for reuniting lost pets are outlined at vcas.us/lostandfound.
4. RECLAIM YOUR PETS! If transportation or finances are a barrier to reclaiming your animals, PLEASE ask us for help. We may be able to assist with finances or transporting dogs to their families. Reunion is always our number one goal.

Thank you all for your support and dedication to the people & animals of Ventura County.

*Promotion does not guarantee adoption of a shelter pet. Our adoption counselors speak with all interested parties to learn more about their home, lifestyle, and their experiences to ensure good matches are made. We counsel on every animal as an individual to make sure they find a family suited to their needs! Licensing fee of $25 may apply for Ventura County residents.

Nathan Winograd has published a new article on Bruce’s case.

He examines the legal efforts still underway, the County’s threat of sanctions, and the humane resolution SPARC continues to pursue.

At the center of the article is a question that remains unanswered:

Why kill Bruce when a safe, permanent rescue sanctuary is willing to give him the stability and care he deserves?

Bruce remains protected by a federal preservation order while SPARC continues pursuing its claims in state and federal court. SPARC maintains that it was never given notice or an opportunity to assert its contractual and property rights before the County ordered Bruce killed.

Nathan also highlights the work of SPARC’s state court counsel, Dan Bolton of the Walter Clark Legal Group.

Dan has defended SPARC’s right to be heard, challenged the County’s threat of sanctions, and repeatedly offered to meet with County officials to pursue a resolution that saves Bruce’s life, complies with the law, and avoids unnecessary litigation. Those overtures have not been accepted.

We are deeply grateful to Nathan for continuing to shine a light on Bruce’s story—and to Dan and the Walter Clark Legal Group for continuing to stand with SPARC and Bruce.

This has never been a choice between compassion and community safety.

Both can be achieved.

There is no public benefit to killing Bruce.

Bruce is still waiting.

And SPARC is still fighting.
