For World Pet Obesity Month, we’re asking you:
What do you think was the difference between 11 and 13-year-old dogs in the bowl?

In a lifelong study, 48 Labrador puppies were paired.

One dog in each pair got 25% less food than its pair-mate, from 8 weeks of age until death.

What do you think happened?

Body condition is a 1-to-9 score of how lean or heavy a dog is; 4 to 5 is ideal.
Median means the middle dog in each group.

What that means:

•The restricted dogs averaged 4.6. Their full-fed pair-mates averaged 6.7, about two points above ideal.
•The typical lean dog got about 1.8 more years: 13.0 versus 11.2.
•By age 2, 42% of the heavier dogs had hip arthritis on X-rays, versus 4% of the lean dogs.
•One breed, one facility, funded by Nestlé Purina. It doesn’t promise your dog the same result.

Bottom line:
Feel for your dog’s ribs this week.
Then ask your vet where your dog sits.

What handlers told us at ATK9

We spent ATK9 in real conversations with the people doing the work: police K9, military, detection, and trailing and tracking handlers.
Different lines of service, and the same themes kept coming up.
This carousel is the consensus we heard.

• The job asks a lot from the dog: high-stress environments, blast exposure, TBI.
• Handlers want greater gut and immune support for dogs working under that stress.
• Recovery is part of the job.
• Among the handlers who shared their dogs’ challenges with us, about 50% of dogs had severe protein allergies, with allergy panels to back it up. Beef was the primary allergen.
• Handlers are searching for better nutrition options. They need nutrition that works.
• Drive depends on the breed and the job.
• Above all, they want to do more for the partner working beside them.

Every point here came from handlers in and on the field, telling us what their dogs need.
