Here are some tips for your family, including your pets to enjoy the upcoming holiday weekend:

Look up local family friend Labor Day activities: some small towns host pet parades, dog friendly vendor fairs, etc.

Travel Safely: If you are taking a road trip, hiking or camping, make sure pets are wearing collars and tags with current information & proper fitting harnesses.

Look out for: hot surfaces, low water bowls, open flames (grill), splintered bones, wooden skewers and human treats that are not appropriate or safe and even poisonous for pets (chocolate, garlic, onions, alcohol, grapes, etc.)

Give your pet accessible areas a check for quick escapes: broken fence boards, open latches, holes under fence, etc. With doors opening frequently pets can also easily slip out.

Wet treats for kitties are really about hydration support, palatability, and training utility — not general nutrition.

Pros:
• Hydration – useful for cats that don’t drink enough water, especially older cats or those prone to urinary/kidney issues
• High palatability – helpful for picky eaters, hiding pills, or coaxing a sick cat to eat something
• Great for training – fast to deliver, easy to lick off a spoon or finger, so they work well as high-value rewards in positive-reinforcement training

Cons:
• Many are low in actual nutrition and high in fillers, thickeners (like guar gum), or sugar/carbs — they’re treats, not food
• Calories add up quickly if used often, and vets generally recommend treats stay under ~10% of daily calories
• Some cats with sensitive stomachs react to the gums/fillers with soft stool

Scent marking: Cats have scent glands in their paws, so scratching leaves a chemical “signature” that helps them feel secure in their space.

Claw maintenance: Scratching sheds the outer husk of the claw, keeping it healthy — not filing it down like a nail trim.

Physical release: It stretches the back, shoulders, and spine, and gives cats a satisfying way to work off energy or stress.

Instinct, not defiance: A cat scratching furniture isn’t “misbehaving” — it’s meeting a need with the surface available. A cat tree just redirects that need to an appropriate outlet.

Did you know that begging is a learned behavior? Somewhere along the way, hovering, staring, or pawing paid off (even just once!).

The good news: what’s learned can be unlearned, using the same force-free tools.

Prevent the rehearsal — feed your dog before your meal, or give them a stuffed Kong/chew in another room during dinner.

Reinforce the alternative — reward calm, four-on-the-floor or “place” behavior generously and consistently.

Everyone’s on board — one slipped table scrap resets the clock. Consistency across the whole household is key.

Begging fades fastest when it stops working and a better option is right there waiting.

Potty training, force-free style

House training isn’t about “good” or “bad” dog — it’s about clear communication. Here’s the science-based approach we use:

📍 Pick one spot. Consistency helps your dog build a strong scent association with where to go.

⏰ Anchor it to a schedule. After waking up, after meals, after play — get ahead of the need instead of reacting to it.

🤫 Stay quiet while they go. Talking or praising mid-elimination can actually interrupt the behavior.

✅ Mark + reward within 1-2 seconds of them finishing — that’s the window where reinforcement really sticks.

🚫 Never punish an accident. Scolding doesn’t teach anything except to fear you. Clean it up, rule out medical causes, and move forward.

Force-free doesn’t mean hands-off — it means clear, consistent, science-backed communication your dog can actually understand.
