We’re excited to share that Foundation Equine Clinic has been invited to sponsor the War Horse Eventing Series, hosted at The Carolina Horse Park.

This partnership means a great deal to us. WHES isn’t just any series; it’s an iconic part of our equestrian community — one we love, one many of us grew up in, and one our own veterinarians and staff have personally competed in over the years. Being able to support it in this new way feels like coming full circle.

We’ve always believed that horse showing should be accessible, affordable, and welcoming, especially for amateurs and developing riders. The War Horse Eventing Series reflects that mission through its supportive environment and high‑quality competition that encourages learning and growth at every level. It’s a place where riders can gain confidence, school effectively, and enjoy a positive show experience — and where so many of our clients choose to compete, and when any of our veterniarinas and staff have time to compete, this is where we love to show!

War Horse is close to our heart, and we’re proud to help keep this beloved series running strong for the horses, riders, and community that have shaped us.

Here’s to great rides and healthy horses!

💸💸YES!!! The generic Gastrogard is finally here! 💸💸

We love a new product launch… but this one had our whole team doing a double take 👀

Gastro - - - what? 😂

Despite the confusing name, we're excited to see what the pricing on this product will be (we don't know yet). There's no doubt this will eventually lead to lower cost treatment for gastric ulcer syndrome in horses and that is a fantastic thing!

Here’s the scoop:
The FDA has approved Gastrobim (omeprazole) oral paste for treating gastric ulcers and preventing recurrence in horses and foals 4 weeks and older.
Gastrobim is a proton pump inhibitor, meaning it reduces stomach acid by blocking the pumps in the stomach lining. It contains the same active ingredient as Gastrogard (approved in 1999), and has been determined to be bioequivalent to the brand-name product.
📌 Available by prescription only through a licensed veterinarian.

Now be honest… what do you think inspired the name “Gastrobim”? 👇

We’re honored to help with this exciting “magic cross!” 🤩

We’re honored to help with this exciting “magic cross!” 🤩

It was a big (yet, chaotic) day today for Ruby (Doras Berry Finest). After chasing down a UPS man for a lost shipment of "swimmers", she was finally bred to Best Shine (I'll post him in the Facebook comments).

Best Shine, while amazing himself, is out of the great mare, Best Stop. We are doubling down on some of the best mares in the industry on this prospective foal's pedigree. Ruby's pedigree brings another powerhouse mare, Custom Red Berry, to the family tree. The paternal lines of this match are also a "magic cross", proven to produce athletic and talented offspring again and again.

Next Wednesday, we look for an embryo. 🤞

🥳30 looks pretty amazing on Duncan!🥳

Help us wish a very Happy Birthday to one of our oldest (and most beloved!) patients, Duncan!

At 30 years young, he’s still thriving and enjoying life, bringing so much joy to his people, and even heading out for light rides on the Foundation.

Duncan is a true testament to what thoughtful, dedicated care can do. His owners go above and beyond, and we are always there to support his metabolic health, GI health, and dental care.

Cheers to Duncan and many more happy, healthy years ahead! 🐴🤩🥳

We love ❤️horses❤️ here at Foundation Equine Clinic, but do you know what we love even more? Baby pictures of horses! 🐎🏇🐎

The Jockey Club recently released the ID My Thoroughbred app, which allows users to access Thoroughbred information using a microchip number. When a Thoroughbred that has a microchip recorded with The Jockey Club is scanned or a valid microchip number is entered, the app provides the horse’s name and detailed markings and even foal pictures. If you own a Thoroughbred with a Jockey Club registered microchip and have foal pictures, share them here! We can’t wait to see. 🤩

In addition to identifying Thoroughbreds, the app is integrated with Thoroughbred Connect so a user can indicate if a horse is in need of assistance or if they are willing to provide assistance for a horse.

The ID My Thoroughbred app is available for free through Google Play or the App Store.

📢 Please join us in issuing a HUGE “welcome!!” to Dr. Elizabeth “Izzi” Frieden!

Dr. Frieden has graciously agreed to join us for the busy spring season here in Southern Pines, prior to making a military-adjacent move to Kansas this summer.

Our clients will be treated to Dr. Frieden’s smiling face, great sense of humor, and passionate dedication to equine care from now until mid-May!

Read on for Dr. Frieden’s official bio, and a lighthearted QandA!

Dr. Elizabeth “Izzi” Frieden grew up in Ithaca, NY where she participated in pony club, competed hunter/jumpers, and played arena polo. She received her undergraduate degree from Cornell University and her Doctorate of Veterinary Medicine from Virginia-Maryland College of Veterinary Medicine. Her research experience in both universities was centered around advanced reproductive techniques, and she recently published data on new pregnancy evaluation criteria in sheep/ goats.

Dr. Frieden spent her early veterinary career working with racehorses in Saratoga, NY and has also enjoyed a wide range of practice types including time in small animal emergency rooms. Her heart belongs to horses though, and she particularly loves to help strengthen happy, healthy human-animal bonds through excellent medicine and preventive care.

Outside of work Dr. Frieden likes to read any book she can get her hands on, sew, crochet, and try every food truck at Red’s Corner with her husband and 1 year old daughter.

Why did you decide to become a veterinarian?
- I decided to be a vet after having a chronically laminitic halter-bred Paint as a kid that I tried to take eventing - (surprise: it didn’t work out)- . I Wanted to fix all genetic problems!
-(please note: no chronically laminitic halter-bred Paints were injured in the pursuit of this dream, it was, ultimately, just a dream and a plan)-

Do you still ride?
- I do! I have an Irish Sport Horse gelding named Loki. I’m hoping to compete him in the jumpers when he’s ready!

What do you like to read?
- -(**redacted** ((she reads those fairy books we hear are quite popular!)))

What do you do to relax?
- I sew! I cross-stitch flowers surrounded by rap lyrics.

What’s a fun fact about you that many people may not know?
- My mother was a producer for PBS growing up so I was on TV a lot as a small child. I also grew up where my house was the start line for rowing regattas. I was asked to prom via boat.

What do you want to be when you “grow up?”
- My husband and I plan to retire to his family maple syrup farm in upstate New York -(maple farmers!). -

✨✨⭐📢BIG NEWS for Dr. Hannah Hinson and the Foundation Equine Clinic team!!! ✨✨⭐📢

We’re thrilled to celebrate Dr. Hannah Hinson, who has officially achieved diplomate status with the American Board of Veterinary Practitioners (ABVP) as an equine veterinary specialist!

The term "specialist" is reserved for those veterinarians who have completed extensive, advanced training in a specific field of veterinary medicine and have passed rigorous examinations to become board-certified. There are only 22 AVMA-recognized specialties and only about 7 of those produce specialists working primarily with horses.

The ABVP recognizes specialist veterinarians with exceptional knowledge, skill, and competency in the care of the whole patient of a single species — and Dr. Hinson embodies exactly that!

How did she get here? Dr. Hinson’s path to board certification included:

✨ Undergraduate studies, followed by 4 years of veterinary medical school
✨An ambulatory internship in a university hospital
✨Completing a 3‑year field service residency under board‑certified specialists in equine surgery, internal medicine, and sports medicine/rehabilitation (Virginia Tech)
✨Earning a master’s degree in biomedical and veterinary science, while completing the residency
✨Publishing her master’s research on equine infectious disease in Equine Veterinary Education
✨Submitting detailed case studies showcasing her expertise in managing challenging and complex equine patients
✨Successfully passing the ABVP board certification exam in November

What Dr. Hinson’s ABVP Certification Means for Our Clients.

🐴More advanced, evidence‑based care: Dr. Hinson's specialty training ensures your horse benefits from the most current, research‑supported approaches in equine medicine.
🐴Stronger diagnostic accuracy - Years of specialty mentorship and case review sharpen clinical judgment, helping identify issues earlier and more precisely.
🐴Enhanced management of complex cases - From challenging lameness to intricate medical conditions, Dr. Hinson brings elevated expertise to horses with multifaceted needs.
🐴Improved continuity of care - Her residency and case‑based training emphasize whole‑patient management, meaning your horse’s long‑term health plan is more comprehensive and cohesive.
🐴Access to a higher standard of equine veterinary practice - ABVP diplomates meet rigorous national standards, giving clients confidence that their veterinarian has achieved one of the profession’s highest credentials.
🐴A resource for second opinions and advanced consultations - Clients gain access to a veterinarian who can guide difficult decisions, collaborate with specialists, and support complex treatment plans.
🐴Commitment to lifelong learning - Maintaining diplomate status requires ongoing education, ensuring your horse’s care continues to evolve with the field.

Please join us in congratulating Dr. Hinson on this incredible professional milestone. We’re so proud to have her on our team as she continues to elevate the standard of equine care.
