Friday check-in: HOT, tired, and surrounded by produce. 😂

Monday brought a hawk in the barn! Tuesday brought a chipmunk in the house! I am VERY thankful the woodland creatures apparently cleared my schedule for the rest of the week. 👋🏼

Our friends have been getting extra attention through this heat too, with fresh water multiple times a day, lots of shade, and the fans working overtime right along with the rest of us. 🐐🐓☀️

Meanwhile, the crockpots, canner and dehydrator are working overtime, the freezer is FULL, jars are everywhere, and my kitchen is a complete disaster. 😬

And just for perspective… not pictured: a freezer full of tomatillos, tomatoes and apples, and this is barely a dent in the pear situation. I have pears for DAYS. Possibly weeks. Send help. 🍐😂

We may be CLOSED this Labor Day weekend, but we are definitely still laboring. Preservation season waits for no one.

Here’s hoping for a cooler weekend and absolutely no more surprise visitors. 😂

Plot twist: the kale bed lives. 😂🥬

A couple weeks ago, this entire bed was basically an all-you-can-eat buffet for cabbage worms. I seriously considered ripping everything out, but instead I cut the plants way back and decided to give them one more chance.

Very glad I did. They are coming back BEAUTIFULLY. 💚

Bring on the fall kale. 🍂🥬

One of my favorite things about what we grow here at TGG is that you’re probably not going to find it sitting in the produce section at the grocery store. Hello, cucamelons. 😂

We are definitely not your stop for 40 pounds of perfectly identical tomatoes. But if you want to try something a little weird, a little beautiful, and a whole lot more interesting? That’s our lane. 🙋‍♀️

Case in point… THIS basket.

🍫 Chocolate Miracle
Deep, dusky coloring with a rich, classic tomato flavor that leans sweet with just enough tang. This is my first year growing these and they have absolutely earned a spot in the garden again.

🤍 White Beauty
First of all… WHO KNEW THERE WAS A WHITE TOMATO?! 😂 These are mild, sweet and low-acid tasting, with a really smooth flavor. Also my first year growing them, and they have done SO well. I’ve got a whole windowsill full still working on their glow-up.

🎨 Pink Jazz
Basically garden artwork. Sweet, fruity, juicy and just a little tangy, with those gorgeous pink-orange stripes. Unfortunately, I think I only have ONE more coming, so apparently Pink Jazz decided to be an extremely limited edition this year. 🙄😂

This is exactly why I love growing heirloom and unusual varieties. You may not leave TGG with a bushel basket full of tomatoes…

…but you might leave saying, “Wait… tomatoes come in THAT color?!”

And really, that’s way more fun. 🍅

What a way to wrap up August. 💚

THANK YOU for all the kind words about our Living Dayton feature—and to everyone who showed up and supported us this weekend! Seeing so many new and familiar faces meant more than you know. 🥹

September at TGG is about to be SO much fun, and we’re extra excited to support two sisters taking on the NYC Marathon!🏃‍♀️

Join us Sunday, September 13 at 1:00 PM for a special TGG Goat Yoga Fundraiser! Half of the proceeds will support the JCK Foundation, and the other half will benefit Team for Kids. 🐐🧘‍♀️

Tickets are $30 and include yoga, laughs and plenty of goat time—all for two wonderful causes. 💚

Come stretch, snuggle and help us cheer these sisters all the way to New York City!
